I've drove a Highlander & was very impressed with the power. It's not the same engine as the Tacoma though. The Tacoma engine uses Atkinson cycle valve timing. It sucks all the low end torque out of the engine in favor of fuel economy. Maybe this was already pointed out in the above posts but I didn't see it.

A few years ago I had a 2006 Tundra. I'd changed the fan belt on it myself once. Huge PITA. Next time it started squeaking I called the dealer & made an appointment for them to change the fan belt. Appointment day came & I dropped the truck off at the dealer. Later that day the service dept called to tell me my they had diagnosed the truck needed a new fan belt, they didn't have one in stock, I was to pick my truck up & they'd notify me when the belt was in stock. Go figure.

I had a Highlander as a loaner. Definitely felt peppier than the Tacoma. I think the extra gears helped. Also, found out you can get the start-stop feature to start when you want by simply letting up on the brake pedal some. For instance if you are at a light in a line of cars and it turns green and you know you need to go soon, ease some pressure off the pedal and it starts. I found it was usually lagging if I tried to start moving with the engine off (full brake pressure until I was ready to let off). I would be on the gas before it was fully started.
