    Hello,

I recently did oil change on my Tacoma by myself. I used a graduated cylinder and I would like to clean the inside. What is the good (and cheap) solvent to clean it up?

I plan to change the differential oil and transmission oil in the near future. Ideally, the solvent should work on all these oils.

I might have left over mineral spirits. Does it work?

    Thanks

Why in the hell do you want to use a solvent??? Why do you think you need to use a solvent??? I’m just curious, I’m sure you have a good reason.

I want to remove the residual engine oil inside the graduated cylinder so that I can use that graduated cylinder for another purpose - for example, changing the differential fluid, though some might say you do not need to use a graduated cylinder.

I thought about wiping the inner wall of the graduated cylinder with cloth, but it is hard to reach the bottom of the graduated cylinder and it might leave some fiber/filament. I do not need to use solvent as long as the inner wall of the graduated cylinder is cleaned.

Use a good dish soap, a brush, and hot water. Rinse the hell out of it and let dry. Get a graduated cylinder brush, or a bottle brush (homebrew shop) to reach the bottom.

If there is still residual oil, you can use hexane to dissolve it.

Just curious, why are you using a graduated cylinder for oil changes?

Thanks for the clarification. Wasn’t clear why you wanted the solvent.

Thanks. Okay, hexane!. Well, I did not know the engine oil plastic bottle has a scale until I started the oil change work. Since I have already bought a graduated cylinder, I had to use it!

I probably should have used the term "cleaner". As a chemist, I am more used to say "solvent".

    Um, the engine-oil flavored plates:eek:
