Fetal position FTW! In all seriousness though, I think it will all work out with the new one and you'll find a great sleeping solution.

I'm so sorry for your loss! It's wild how much "personhood" our trucks can hold and the mourning associated with it. Truly glad to hear both you and your son were alright, and there's something that feels personal about our trucks taking the hit. Hear you on the lack of desire to move on... 220k+ miles is just getting broken in!

Agreed. I'm still not over it, I prob took care of that truck better than I take care of myself! Best truck I've ever owned by far...so reliable on & off-road. Never left me high & dry...

At 5'5" you could easily build a similar platform to what you had and sleep on a bit on an angle. Or as others have said, roof tents are also a popular option.

Turns out I'd been creeping on the wrong truck on the dealer's website. Confirmed 4door with 6' bed - she's a big blue one!

I'll mosey on over to the build threads. I looked a lot at the Gen 2 builds to design my last version and they were SO inspirational.

I'll also eventually need to offload my past build and also hi-top canopy *ahem building my 50 posts*.

Looking at your old setup you can easily do a shell as long as it is built to support a roof tent. There are also mounting brackets out there that come over the bed rails and provide a bike mount on the side of a camper shell. Wish I could remember the name, maybe someone here will know. But its a hell of a lot easier than putting bikes ontop of a shell.

I know the feeling, I rolled my 09 last year and ended up in a '21. The power is different, but im not sure it warrants all the tough love it gets here. I just finished building a version of this drawer build. I used extruded Al for the frame, but the drawers are the same. it has been a game changer in the camp set up and cooking aspect of truck camping. it looks a lot more involved than it is, but a solid solution if you spend a lot of time in the truck. Good luck with the new spaceship, i mean truck, i like it more than my 09.

I agree, I'm loving the upgrade in tech in my 2016 a lot, and so far I really have no complaints with it, it feels different than the 2006, but not a bad different.

My rental provided by insurance is a '22 RAV4 and I have to say, coming from 2005 it's SO COOL to have music and nav, as well as the ability to push a button and dictate a text/make a call. That said, I'm aware that 2019 does not have Apple/Android Auto, so it'll be limited.

My only other vehicles in life were a turbo Volvo and a '64 1/2 Mustang, so I'm really used to having a lot of power! :burnrubber:

Yeah, I guess I'm sort of out of the loop on what sort of connectivity a phone and car should have. So far my android seems to do everything I want it to with the truck, makes calls, reads texts, plays music, etc. I've had no issues connecting and doing all that via Bluetooth, so I can't really speak to the limitations of it. I just know I had to put an aftermarket radio in my old truck to play Bluetooth music.

Mine still had an audio jack with an adaptor, and I couldn't listen to music and charge my phone at the same time. It'd broken for a bit, and my friend and I re-soldered the audio wires back together just a couple weeks ago. Stoked for the upgrade!

Yeah, it will be a huge advance in tech no matter what. Sadly my phone doesn't have wireless charging capabilities for the charging pad, but I'm sure some of my passengers will put it to use!

Sorry for the loss but glad to hear you are ok. I had a 2006 and moved to a 2016. I think it was an upgrade in every way. I even went from MT to AT and would do it again in a heartbeat. IMO, Cosmoline or Woolwax, KDMaxx Pro tune, and airbags or a spring upgrade for the rear and pile on the miles. Also, I don't know your experience with fiberglass toppers, but there are metal options available now that seem worth the $ to me.

I think people need to get their eyes checked. That cavalry blue truck the OP posted, if that's the one she bought in the picture, is definitely the long-bed. You can easily tell by where the gas-door is.

As you can see.. she made an error.. as we all do, then corrected it.. so please get your eyes checked before sticking your foot in your mouth

Do me a favor... Find a deserted road, come to a complete stop. Wait a second and floor it! Hold it floored to 60mph and then let off. Then come back and tell me it is underpowered!

These trucks don't have as nice an initial tip-in as the second gens (I've had both) and yes the trans is annoying on hilly highway drives. But honestly I do like this one much better than the 3 05's I had. And it really does get much better mileage too. I too have a 4 door with the six foot bed. It's kinda long. But the 5 foot beds I had previously were kinda useless for hauling stuff. Sleeping in it.. nope.

I wish I had taken pictures but a friend of mine with a 3rd gen 4 door went on a pretty epic road trip/motorcycle/camping adventure out west for like 6 months a few years ago. He put the bike in the bed. But he removed the passenger seat and the rear seat and made a flat sleeping platform in the cab. It was neat. And he's 6'2".

Look look I'm not saying it's weak! But it is a less powerful engine and a larger truck than I had, is all, and I've heard some whinging from those who've updated.

This is rated more HP and more torque.
    Enjoy.
