Just curious... (And because I can't see it) ....
So I'm going to the hardware store this morning .. Just rolling along on cruise control (And mine has the Active Cruise Control) and there's someone behind me ... A little bit too close for my tastes, but ...
So I roll up behind someone going slower than me and my truck starts braking to keep the pre-determined distance. I see the guy behind me in the rear-view and, all of a sudden their front dips heavily. So I'm thinking 'OK, knumb-nuts just isn't paying attention..' But then I thought... With the active cruise control and the automatic braking .. Do the brake lights on my truck come on? Because I didn't touch the brake pedal. Anybody know?

Yes (I think). Makes sense that they would.

    Really, I have no idea.

That's what you would think, right? I'd probably bet that it was just knumb-nuts not paying attention, but it just got me to thinking.. LOL!

The last time this was asked the general consensus of that thread was that the brake lights do come on. I can't confirm though. Mostly because no one took me up on my suggestion of installing a dome security mirror in the bed so they could watch their own brake lights...

    That's too easy.

We need someone to volunteer to set their cruise and get to close to someone in front of them with someone they know following them for conformation.

I'm out cause I don't have any friends.

Can confirm from multiple vehicles I’ve owned when your adaptive cruise applies brakes your brake lights do come on. It would be a big liability for the manufacturer if it didn’t and you got rear ended.

Someone must have kids. An less-than-favorite child that can ride in the bed at highway speeds and yell every time the light comes on.

It's similar to Tesla and their regenerative braking. In a Tesla, if you're going full speed and you let off the accelerator, regen braking occurs and your brake lights will come on.

I spent a lot of time in the back of dads truck growing up and I turned out okay(ish). This was before 3rd brake lights though.

I don't like adaptive cruise control.

IMHO, it can lull people into a non-attentive state.

Same thoughts on self-drive. I ride motorcycle and have seen too many idiots behind the wheel doing all kinds of stuff. Reading books or newspapers, applying makeup, brushing teeth, shaving, styling hair, reading fold-out maps.....the most bizarre....cutting toenails. This is separate from the dipsticks immersed in their cell phones, pads or laptops.

Just ask someone from the 808 to confirm, one of their passengers in the bed will be able to confirm if the brake lights come on or not. :D

We had a couple of station wagons before minivans became the cool new thing. Nothing like folding down the seats and laying out a blanket for those long road trips.

I'm really sensitive to this and its a big reason why I rarely use automatic CC. When I started driving my dad taught me that if I was using my brakes on the tollway/interstate then either I wasn't paying attention or something unexpected had happened, and that when I saw someone else's brake lights turn on I should assume the same two possibilities and stay away from them. Even in traffic it usually isn't necessary if you're paying attention and planning ahead even a little bit. So now people are driving around with their ACC set to 80 mph when the flow of traffic is 72 and their car is dutifully accelerating and then tapping the brakes over and over to maintain the set distance to the car in front of them. I hate the idea of being "that guy" who is making everyone else skittish, and I have no way of knowing how much the software rides the brakes vs passively decelerating when approaching the set distance to the next vehicle.

No shit, right? I never get tail-gated by someone who is driving a new or near new rig, so you know they have full coverage.
I always get tail-gated by someone in a 25 year-old Honda Civic that's 4 different colors from the junk yard replacement fenders and hood, with no grille and one headlight that's duct-taped on, driving 60 mph with a very questionable spare donut tire.

Yes, it does come on. I had some stuff in the bed and the brake light was reflecting off the cargo.
