Yep, mine is the same. It's always different. I think I'm just going to wipe it clean and start over. I moved all of my pictures, music, and documents the other night onto an external hard drive. I'm going to run a virus scan on the external hard drive just to be sure I didn't move it. I doubt I did since this seems to only affect the system files and drivers.

Update: I just wiped the hard drive and re-installed windows. I'm reloading all of the drivers and programs right now.

Bit drastic, but 100% effective unless you restore bad data.

Yep, I was just fed up with it and it was just easier to wipe and start over. Supposedly the virus only affects system files and not documents, pictures, music, etc. I moved all of my documents, pictures, music, and videos out to my external hard drive then scanned the hard drive with malwarebytes and AVG. The windows disk I found was XP SP1 but it wasn't a big deal, I just updated it with SP3 from microsofts website once I got windows loaded. I had to download all the drivers from Dell's website from another computer and load them on a thumb drive then install them that way.

I've got the computer up and running with all my old programs reloaded except office. The office disk I found was a bootleg version and it's not installing properly. Anyone have an old version of office (03 or 07) with a good key they'll send me? I'll shoot you some money on paypal.

I'm thinkin of trying open office, anyone used it before?

I use open office at home, haven't had any issues at all. I also use Google docs more these days as I like having my stuff in the cloud. So far Docs has been able to open MS files as well. I'm not a heavy user, that load stays at work.

What about spreadsheets and access? That's what I primarily use.

I got tired of all that windoze bs. Go buy an Apple. Yeah it costs more buy not having to worry about crap is such a joy. Not to mention they run fast as hell.

They are all right though. Wipe the drive is the easiest way and least frustrating. Every time I worked on one for someone I just went ahead and wiped the drives. If they had something on there, there wasn't any telling what else was hiding in the depths. Best of luck to you OP.

np on excel - don't use access. Unless you buy the Office Professional, you don't get access, but you get to spend a lot. :)

Open office is good, but not as good as word is.

I used open office for a while before getting word for $8. Google docs have always treated me good tho too.

I don't really use word that often. I mainly use excel and Access. It's cool though, a fellow member here on TW sent me a copy of office he had. Thanks a lot! The computer is fully operational.

I've had bad luck with computers the last two weeks. My work laptop's hard drive took a dive earlier this week. It was out of warranty so I've got a brand new shiny laptop and they're in the process of upgrading all of our computers to window 7 so my new work laptop has windows 7  Fortunately the hard drive didn't completely crash so I was able to back everything up and load it on my new machine.

Yea, let's not encourage piracy on this great forum, thanks.

Seriously. My work offered Office Pro 2010 for $10.

you mean there is a practical use for access?

Oh yeah, I use it every day at my normal 9-5 job. It's for building relational databases. I have a few different databases I've built for work groups our department to use and manage data. I learned how to use it in one of my MIS classes in college.

I built a database for my landscape business. It tracks all of my expenses, income, etc. and generates reports that I can use come tax time to quickly calculate my expenses and income by category, You can use it to create invoices, etc. It's a little more dynamic than excel.

It's quite a powerful tool to use once you understand it. It's also relatively inexpensive compared to other database software and is easy for entry level database people to use.For someone who doesn't understand relational databases it might seem like a foreign language. I use them every day at work (Oracle, Teradata, and Access) so it comes natural to me.

    You did.

I even quoted that in my post, so I'm not sure why you are questioning it. Just don't discuss it on here. I don't really care what you do in your personal life, but let's not bring piracy discussions onto TW. Thanks.

Ahh... I see, now that I re-read it, I guess the use of the word "copy" made it seem that way.

If you already have a key, then you can get the software from M$. No need to "copy" it from anyone...

Either way, if you're going to get Office - buy it legit. There's tons of ways to get it cheaply, no need to pirate it.
