Well when we were talking about this the other day (16th) I decided to request an invite. Today I checked my email and sure enough there was an invitation to join google voice. I got myself a pretty awesome number and best of all it was free.

What would I do without the wealth of knowledge floating around TW. :D

I signed up a while back and got the invite too. Haven't done a damn thing with it. I'm tempted to start using the google voice number just for bills, etc so if things go to collections or if they start calling because I'm late I can just block all the numbers. Or get the VM and read it later when I feel like dealing with them.

Doesn't make much sense for me to have it ring my cell AND home phone since my wife is usually home when I'm not so she'd get the call intended for me. But I figured they'd be adding features down the road and I might as well get in on it now.

I don't receive any calls on my number. I use the service to make free long distance phone calls.

I have been a user for almost three years now, starting back when "Google Voice" was "Grand Central". It's the only phone number I need ever give out these days. It rings my cell, my BlackBerry, both my home lines, my MagicJack, my Skype number and my phone at my desk at work, depending upon who is calling and what time it is. Some or all. On top of that, I haven't paid a cent in long distance charges since.

I also like the "Click to Call" widget, where I can give someone a web address, they can visit it, type in a number and GV will call them, then ring my phone, all for free.

The voice mail, texting and other features are also pretty slick.

Over all, I give it two thumbs up. It's got a good beat and I can dance to it...

That click to call thing sounds cool! We have unlimited long distance on our land line so we usually call out of state friends rather that have them call us. Now, is this click to call thing good for a limited time, or is it something they can bookmark or save and use whenever they want to call you? This is the first I've heard of it.

They can bookmark your page and use it whenever they want. I just created a page on my site, then I can give anyone I want to be able to call me that address. All they need to do it put in their name and number and click the call button.

    Works slick.

I've been using google voice for quite sometime... it's pretty sweet. I use it to protect myself while making craigslist transactions, etc. where I wouldn't want some rando having my personal cell number. I've also utilized it for my fraternity at WSU for a DD service to all the brothers. I just link the DD's numbers to the voice number so all my brothers have to do is call the "beepers" number (my google voice number) and it will ring the DD's phones (multiple people usually therefore multiple phones). It works out because they only have to have that "beeper" number in their phone or remember that one number to call the DD's, no fumbling through the phonebook calling 50+ brothers to find out who the DD is. I have my voice number on my business cards, and yes you can link your work phone and cell phone to the same google voice number.

I know old thread but instead of making a new one....
I currently carry 2 mobile phones, one for work one for personal. My work does not care how much I use or what I use the one they provide me with for. I always kept the personal number because I have had it forever and don't want to loose that number.

My thought is to port my personal number to a google voice number so I would not have to keep paying for it. Then just use my work mobile to get and send messages and calls from google voice.

I was just wondering if any one has done this and what their experience with it has been.
