In CA, it's always up to the Officer's discretion to pull you over or not for something minor like tint. They usually pull you over to check you out for other things, ie, warrants, etc. Maybe the officer just didn't like your truck color or was having a bad day. CA vehicle code 26708 basically says you can have tint but not that dark. Who even makes tint that let's 88 percent of light?

You have to remember that the stock windows are tinted slightly from the factory, somewhere around 90-95% VLT. SO if your tint is at the limit it is more than likely to dark with the addition of the OEM tint.

If you read the Cali law:

    V C Section 26708.5 Transparent Materials
    Transparent Materials
26708.5. (a) No person shall place, install, affix, or apply any transparent material upon the windshield, or side or rear windows, of any motor vehicle if the material alters the color or reduces the light transmittance of the windshield or side or rear windows, except as provided in subdivision (b), (c), or (d) of Section 26708.
    (b) Tinted safety glass may be installed in a vehicle if (1) the glass complies with motor vehicle safety standards of the United States Department of Transportation for safety glazing materials, and (2) the glass is installed in a location permitted by those standards for the particular type of glass used.

    Amended Sec. 2, Ch. 476, Stats. 1998. Effective January 1, 1999.

It appears that you can put tinted glass in your vehicle with out a problem. It may cost some $$ but they do not appear to have a limit on the tint, it has to be the correct type of glass though.

I do not live in Cal. so this does not pertain to me but I thought it was worth mentioning.

Just got a ticket from a CHiPer for the tint. I have lots of Cop buddies that will sign off, all of which have tint on their personal vehicles.

Give me a break on the danger factor. So is there a law around when you can wear sun glasses? That's just laughable.

I've had limo all around (except the windshield) for 3 years. My limo tint was really hard to see at night!, but you get used to it. Then one day I got two fix it tickets in one week. Got the tint off and went with medium. I think having dark tint keeps the inside cool and plastics fresh. Picture below is my truck now. Having a white truck highlights you tinted windows:(

I only have medium tints and a white truck. I simply just roll the windows down whenever a cop is around.

Except this is the age of aquarius and Obamacare...why the flock should I be expected to pay for some jackass wannabe's medical care when they try to jump over a speeding car on a pogo stick?

And back on topic: I think the tint laws are more to protect cops: so they can easily see inside the vehicle as they approach when front windows are rolled up.

Most laws are ill conceived knee jerk response to an incident that infringe on the liberties and freedom of the mostly law abiding public. If it was that serious of a consideration, I would assume you would hardly ever see a LEO with tinted windows on their personal cars. But in fact it's the opposite and they now they can get by with the professional courtesy they extend to each other.

But you can keep thinking that big brother is here to protect us because we can't do it for ourselves.

Alright so I'm gonna let you in on a secret since your a TW member...lol. If you want to beat this ticket what you have to do is make a doctors appointment and tell your Doc that your skin has been getting irritated by the sun causing you have to dry skin, rash, sunburn....etc, what have you. Then tell them that you spend a lot of your time driving during the day stuck in traffic, whatever. When the Doc asks where your going with this whole conversation, ask him to write you a Letter/Note saying in his professional opinion he recommends you drive with some sort of tint protection from the sun because your so called medical condition.....

You think it sounds bogus?!?...... think again it really works.

That's not what you said so here's the CVC closest to what you did say. With your outlook, I would never sign your ticket and yes I have that ability. Tell my partner who was shot at, due directly to tint and not seeing the weapon you don't agree with that law. Is the sunglasses law kinda bogus in my view, yes. Is the tint, no.

P.S....the doc note doesn't always work...........

Yes, it is what I said. Read it again.

I don't agree with the law because the outcome likely would have been the same if some low life wants to take a shot. If that was the case, why is tint allowed on the back windows? No one ever sits in the back of a car that a cop would want to see?

Sorry to hear about your partner but don't worry, I won't ask you to sign my ticket.;)

Nice edit from what your post used to say. I'm not gonna argue the point to someone who has never been on the other side of the fence and wants to whine about a fix it ticket they got from breaking the law in the first place. And no, it is not what you said. You need to re-read your original post and CVC 23120 reflect closest to what you were trying to say.
