Had a nephew get off of a Georgia ticket for tint too dark on his Florida registered car. His car is legal in Florida and he cited a Federal law (I don't know what it is, you'll have to look it up for yourself) that requires other states to accept the operating parameters placed upon a vehicle by the state in which it is registered. This is the same law that permits me to operate my Florida registered vehicle in California even though it does not meet the California emissions requirements.

Don't get me started on the Peoples Republic of California. I moved to San Diego when I was 19...No helmet laws..very hands off state. Slowly over the years it got more and more Nanny. Finally after 15 years I had had enough and said farewell to California and moved to Nevada....much better for the next 15 years....The the housing boom and cash out. Now in the other SoCal....M U C H better... Friggin lawless here compared to Народной Республики Калифорнии (People's Republic of California)

NJ is bad with the tinted front windows, my friend got pulled over in his GTI and the cop told him to rip it off or he was going to be ticketed. yea right you need to heat it up to get it off, so he took the ticket and left the tint on.

Not trying to be a jerk, Just FYI. There is no permissable legal limit for tint in California. Any tint can get you a ticket. Some jurisdictions don't enforce it but it isn't legal. Technically, they can give you a non-correctable ticket for it if they want since fix-it tickets are supposed to be repair of broken items (e.g. broken tail light) and not for intentionally modified equipment. If you get a non-correctable, you'll pay much more than the $25 fine.

Read the law, not the tint websites. They're all wrong.

This is the online vehicle code put out by the state. It's more current than the vehicle code books they hand out:
    http://leginfo.ca.gov/cgi-bin/calawquery?codesection=veh&codebody=&hits=20

26708 (10) Sun screening devices meeting the requirements of Section
26708.2 installed on the side windows on either side of the vehicle's
front seat, if the driver or a passenger in the front seat has in
his or her possession a letter or other document signed by a licensed
physician and surgeon certifying that the person must be shaded from
the sun due to a medical condition, or has in his or her possession
a letter or other document signed by a licensed optometrist
certifying that the person must be shaded from the sun due to a
visual condition. The devices authorized by this paragraph shall not
    be used during darkness.

26708.2. Sun screening devices permitted by paragraph (10) of
subdivision (b) of Section 26708 shall meet the following
requirements (i.e. All of the requirements):
    (a) The devices shall be held in place by means allowing ready
removal from the window area, such as a frame, a rigid material with
temporary fasteners, or a flexible roller shade.
    (b) Devices utilizing transparent material shall be green, gray,
or a neutral smoke in color and shall have a luminous transmittance
of not less than 35 percent.
    (c) Devices utilizing nontransparent louvers or other alternating
patterns of opaque and open sections shall have an essentially
uniform pattern over the entire surface, except for framing and
supports. At least 35 percent of the device area shall be open and no
individual louver or opaque section shall have a projected vertical
    dimension exceeding 3/16 inch.
    (d) The devices shall not have a reflective quality exceeding 35
percent on either the inner or outer surface.

The only exception is manufacturer installed tinted safety glass (not tint film):

26708.5. (a) No person shall place, install, affix, or apply any
transparent material upon the windshield, or side or rear windows, of
any motor vehicle if the material alters the color or reduces the
light transmittance of the windshield or side or rear windows, except
as provided in subdivision (b), (c), or (d) of Section 26708.
    (b) Tinted safety glass may be installed in a vehicle if (1) the
glass complies with motor vehicle safety standards of the United
States Department of Transportation for safety glazing materials, and
    (2) the glass is installed in a location permitted by those
standards for the particular type of glass used.

I was in traffic school a long time ago and the police officer who ran it said the primary reason for the law not allowing film on the windows was for accidents. The film holds the window together in larger chunks instead of breaking into smaller pieces as it's designed to do. That's the reason manufacturer tinted safety glass is allowed. I don't know if that's bs or not but it sounds consistent.

Those of you who have gotten a fix it ticket and just paid it and left your windows dark, how did you do that? Just go to the court and pay the ticket and they don't ask you if you fixed it? That seems stupid to me that they would let you just pay it and go on your way with illegal equipment. I had 20% on my WRX and surprise surprise I got a cops attention real quick. I had them lightened to the oregon legal limit of 35% and went on my way.

Now my FJ is tinted on the front to match the rears :spy: *knock on wood*

You can't just leave it dark. You have to remove it. Then, you show it to a cop, who signs it off, and then mail it in with the fine.

I had a friend who was kind of sneaky. When he got a fix-it for tint, he would purposely scratch the passenger side tint and take it into the installer (had a warranty on the tint). They would take the one tint film off and he would interrupt them and tell them he had to run an errand. He would then find a cop, roll down the one tinted window on the opposite side of the cop. The cop would see the window free of tint on usually just looked through the vehicle to see the other side. Since the window was down, the cop thought it was untinted. He would then take it back to the shop to get the tint reinstalled.

I have gotten a couple fix-it tickets, for California you just go into the court where the ticket is due. Depending what boxes are checked you either have to go to inspections, get any Police Officer to sign the back of your ticket and pay $25...that includes the officers at the metal detectors (hint, hint)...they are not typically going to leave their post unless someone can cover. Or you have a straight up fine, all bets are off then, unless you plan on going to Court.

I'm going to say every situation is going to be different, you will have to navigate smartly through your local laws

Bottom line...it's a source of revenue, if your going to tint, keep some extra coin handy and pay your dues.

I'd like to see them come at me, and I'm sure they probably will. I'm moving to Cali this summer, my truck will still retain OR plates.... hopefully California doesn't piss me off too much. At least I don't have to do inspections.... never have ...never will haha!
