It won't matter if you retain your plates. Your vehicle will still be subject to California Law with regards to tint. I assume you're moving here as a Coast Guard member?

You should check this out as well:
    http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/brochures/howto/htvr9.htm#feesdue

Fees must be paid within 20 days of entry or residency to avoid penalties. Any vehicle owned by a California resident must be registered within 20 days of entry into California unless a special permit was obtained. Nonresidents whose vehicles are properly registered to them in their home state or jurisdiction may operate their vehicles in California until they:
    • Accept gainful employment in California.
    • Claim a homeowner's exemption in California.
    • Rent or lease a residence in California.
    • Intend to live or be located here on a permanent basis (for example, acquire a California driver license, acquire other licenses not ordinarily extended to a nonresident, registered to vote).
    • Enroll in an institution of higher learning as a California resident or enroll their dependents in school (K-12).
NOTE: Nonresident military personnel stationed in California or their spouses may operate their vehicles with valid out-of-state license plates from their home state or the state where the military person was last stationed.

I will tell you that I am military and claim out of state residence and also have out of state plates. I have gotten many tinted window tickets here and gotten out of my share as well. It all seems to depend on the knowledge of the officer and some do not seem to know the law as well and the whole "I have a license from this state but have different plates" really confuses many. It it just my opinion that So Cal (especially IE, OC, LA area) is not very military friendly and that can help or hurt you sometimes, as nobody seems to know we exist these days, and therefore seem confused about the residency out of state thing.

I will share with you that I was stopped just last week from CHP and usually they never let me go, but I confused him. I told him I was on active duty orders and that they ran out next month and I was to return back to my home state. He gave me the usual cop threat, I better not see you then, and proceeded to tell me they were cracking down and bringing the heat on fix it violations this year so watch out" I could tell he was confused.

Bottom line is I try not to stick out, I drive a stock TRD, no stickers, no lift, no bling wheels, etc. It didnt matter, wrong place at the wrong time, you either get lucky and be cool about it, play dumb and out of state like you didnt know and you are sorry and maybe you get off. Or it may just be your lucky day. Pay up.

this is where it pays to not be a cop hater. some local PDs, like desert PDs understand that tint is a necessity when its like 120 outside. you go to one of them and ask them to sign off on it and most will

Got me a tint ticket this morning. My buddys going to sign it off so I don't have to take the tint off. Saves me $60, but got to pay 25 to the court. The CHP officer said I can't have NO tint in the state of california. I just though this picture was pretty cool:D

in california i would say no with all the sun out there fuck it pay the ticket and leave the tint on lol jk. idk the laws out there, but i thought they where easier on tinted windows out there? there not really that dark a torch light will def light the interior up and you can see through both in the pic you posted. sucks to hear that in nj they are nazis for dark tint or else my windows would have been blacked out with a nice tint.

Our town police officers have electronic sensors that give the percentage of dark. Mine was 28, should have been 70. I didn't get a ticket but police officer recommended I remove tint from front windows or I would be getting a ticket. I know how to take a hint.

I liked it dark but don't want the hassle. The back is still dark and that is ok with the lawmen.

in wv u can have ur back windows as dark as you want but the front 2 have to b 35% and the windshield can have a tint strip as dark as u want 1 inch past the as1 line on the glass. 35 is plenty dark in the middle of the woods wheelin at night

In Delaware I am pretty sure the law is 70% on front and dark as you want on the back. If the windows are darker then that you must have a waiver approved by a doctor. I actually just got a tint waiver approved so will be getting my windows done/

no matter what in California you will get a ticket if you have any tint on the driver and passanger windows. You can have the other windows limo if you wanted. I got pulled over also for having 35% in the front.
