I am PUMPED! Got a moose draw in the limited entry hunt for a very very remote and beautiful part of British Columbia. Apparently there are 2 extreme risks in that area. Being literally snowed in, in the middle of nowhere, after an overnight snow dump. Secondly, tonnes and tonnes of grizzly bears. No local residents or developments and it's going to be so much fun. The most challenging part will probably be getting there by vehicle, and back out in one piece.

Anyone else use their Tacomas to get to really remote hunting regions, particularly crazy snow and rugged mountains? Love to hear some stories, or prep you did before the trip.

Congrats! My hunting partner and I both have Polaris Ranger 6x6s for the hunts we do here. Might look into renting something along those lines. Personally I prefer putting my money into the side by side versus hard core off-roading my DD. But that's just my take on it and my choice.

Again congrats on the draw ... and like Will said, "not goin' alone are you?"

Nope. Brother-in-law is coming with. Chev 2500 4x4 w/ winch. We will bring both trucks. I figure between the 2 of us we should be able to work our way through most, but in that area an overnight snow dump that time of year apparently requires snowmobiles or snow cats to get out. Should be a little tense but a lot of fun.

Staying in a 10x15 wall tent but will take the camper along for the roady and the amenities.

 Two rigs makes a big difference. Make sure you have additional straps/ropes etc. That tree you need to anchor/winch from isn't always conveniently located. ;)

Thanks. I struck out last year so this year I put in for a spot nobody else puts in for. Odds were like 1.6:1. 2 of us put in for a group hunt so our odds were pretty good.

Have you ever packed out a moose? I pack out bull elk every year and can only imagine what packing a moose a couple miles would be like.

Yeah I have a tonne of chain and straps, as well as a Wyeth Scott more power puller which would probably winch his diesel with me attached behind it. His winch is in a cradle and rigged for front or back. tire chains, tow chains, winch, hand winch, TRED's, some wood planks and shovels. We both run good 235/85r16's in winter. I think we're pretty well set.

This will (hopefully) be my first moose. I have a good lightweight frame pack that will handle 200 lbs (even if I can't in that terrain :ballchain:) and we will each take a quarter, twice. It will be a good workout for sure.

That's the another reason we like the Ranger 6x6s ... we try to be tactical in where we harvest an animal and pick a semi-accessible area.

You would have to unless you kill it within a mile of the truck then 5-6 trips back and fourth wouldn't be terrible.

Haha man I run 7 miles every day and lift weights and the most I can carry for multiple miles is about 120lbs on my Eberlestock and then I start cramping up.

How much does a moose quarter weigh boned for you guys who hunt moose

last 2 weeks in October. If we shit the bed on moose I also got an antlerless mule deer tag for a nearby area. If we don't wind a dull, and we don't find a buck, at least I can take a doe.

    One guy says:
    rear quarters= 125lbs each.
    front quarters= 110lbs each.
One full bag of trimmings, which included all rib meat, neck, brisket and any other loose cut meat.= 120lbs
I only cut the meat off the rib bones, not required to leave on the bone in the GMU I hunt.

Antlers 50lbs or so, cape add another 75 or so.
    ------

    I'm seeing 450-550 boned out.

Depending on size obviously, each quarter with bone and hoof still attached I'd estimate at 75 to 125 lbs. Last medium sized cow we took on a highway corridor control hunt, minus back straps which we steaked separate, came out at 192 lbs of boned out chunked meat we took to processor for dogs, brats, and polish sausage. That's the only hard certain weight figure I have. I think I might have a picture of that one, but I'll have to look. That moose probably weighed 600 to 700 lbs standing.

Those numbers seem realistic for a big bull.

Yeah the tag is for a bull so it won't be light.

Generally speaking, in my experience, you end up ballpark 1/3 of the total animal weight in processed meat.
