The thing your missing here is ov tune has been balls deep in the taco since the 3rd gen came out. He's a tuner first. There have been countless iteratons of tunes for both the engine and transmission. Your perception is that he's like a vendor about to install a drop bracket lift and hack out a cross member but that couldn't be further than what's going on

Looks like this engine can take some boost! Great platform for a SC or TT kit!

I'll probably buy the OV TT, but turbocharging something that doesn't come that way from the factory is usually a downward spiral. The margin for error is certainly reduced, and inevitably you break shit or wear it out quicker. I worked for a lot of Performance shops in the tune a turbo B18 with an AFC, ITC, Boost Controller, etc.. days. Luckily tuning has come a long way and definitely helps.. my integra blew up everytime I got bored, Evo held up much better..

The best comment honestly, so far, is "boost is addictive".. I'd add to that, that shit will break. If you've got discretionary income and know how to turn a wrench it's a fun money pit. Not much different from breaking shit on trails..

oh wow, a thoughtful and reasonable post. Didn’t expect this at all, nice job not being a douche bag.

I’m the same. Will most likely buy turbos and enjoy spending the discretionary income, but looked forward to reading about reasonably possible downfalls, unfortunately TW happened. Surprised stungun isn’t here doing what he does.

Honestly, the Evo held up really well.. the Integra I'd blow up for shits.. B-Series bottom ends are cheap and what's the fun in having a boost gauge if you can't use all of it. Fucking up the head was always a bummer though.

It really all comes down to adjusting the maintenance schedule to reflect the changes.. again similar to the additional maintenance required when off roading. I went 60 mph off road.. it was awesome.. it cost me a cab mount bushing and shock.. but it was awesome.. and I'll do it again.. and buy another cab mount bushing and shock.. when I turbocharge my Tacoma.. I'll look at that boost gauge everyday.. and eventually I'll be sad that it only hits 8psi.. then 10psi... then 12psi.. then what's the harm in 1 BAR... then I'll buy a new short block and rebuild the turbos when a rod goes through the side
    ...

    Let the fun begin

I don't have a pony in this race (I'm bone stock, baby), but that sounds douche-y.

At best, this thread could be a caution for folks to not jump in over their heads when considering boost. That seems wise.

But this post makes you sound like a know-it-all who gets off on predicting others misfortunes and then tossing it back in their faces.

I'd say that answer is a reflection of the type of responses initially posted in response to the thread.

There will definitely be a solid number of "I told you so" candidates once these engines start to see boost.

Hell.. I've had a customer in the past melt a piston on a Supra w/ stock turbos.. that took talent..

This is also a forum though, and forums gonna forum.

I think the OP's intent was as you said, "At best, this thread could be a caution for folks to not jump in over their heads when considering boost. That seems wise."

Reading most of the comments here and nearly all of your comments I just have a couple of questions. First off are you saying these things to sway folks or just have them be forewarned and cautious? Reason I ask is through reading the first initial topic post it seems as though you’re saying your shouldn’t do this’. This is my take on the read anyway.

Another thing I’d like to know is what are your intentions with a topic like this? If intended to just be a warning or a friendly heads up then cool and I’m sure most would say ‘thanks but I’m going to do what I want regardless’.

Anyway, I like you’re comment since it comes off as ‘you shouldn’t do this’ or ‘this can’t be done without a,b,c, etc’. The reason for saying that is people with these type of comments that come off as ‘it can’t be done’ or ‘you shouldn’t do this’ is great for the developer who uses your type of anti product development, in this case a turbo setup, as fuel to do better and prove that it can be done and at an affordable and possibly non early life ending for the truck. Then later on the developer can come back and say I told you so or just a simple thank you and a friendly wink for the added inspiration. People always do so much better when someone says you can’t do it that often people put more devotion into something just to prove that just because most can’t doesn’t mean I can’t :)

The problem you are missing here is that OVtune didn't come out of nowhere just to slap a Turbo on it. He has been working on this engines for a while now and knows them inside out and does a lot of testing so we don't have to worry about it.

You said you weren't interested in the kit anymore because it seemed the engine might not handle it properly but only OV would have the firsthand experience to say so. Every consideration you stated is relative depending on the engine.

No big deal really, you have your opinion but over here if anyone says anything remotely bad or people misinterpret, in the ovtune thread then everyone will jump and bark at ya as if they are loyal guardian angels lol

My intent was just to throw some ideas out there. I tried to be careful with how I came across and my tone in my original post, but it didn’t work and this whole thread took an abrupt left turn. People got douchy, and I lowered myself to their level in a few of my responses.

I never said turbo/supercharging couldn’t be done. I really hope the guy coming out with the turbo kits does very well and these are really successful. I came to this forum having stumbled across that topic in a search because I was looking for a way to add more power.

Based on my experiences and what I know about this engine, I’m leaving it alone for the time being until I hear how things pan out with these initial kits and the other supercharger kits hitting the market soon.

I’m done with this thread. It can be deleted. The discussion I would hope it would generate was an utter failure. This crowd is very different than other forums I’ve been on, and had I known beforehand - I wouldn’t have posted.

Good luck to all going this route. I hope it works out, I genuinely do - because I want to follow this path if it does.
