Would help to know what you have (Year and engine size) but it sounds like a possible timing issue.

Have you checked that your timing belt is intact and the cams are in time?

It's a timing belt engine and if it skips a tooth it can result in this.

Definitely stop using starter fluid. It won't help and can only cause issues. Thankfully you have a metal intake plenum.

I'd start there, it's pretty easy to check the timing on the 3.4.

Few as possible, I really enjoy stock Tacoma's! Except small things, and maybe someday a supercharger.
Engine Coolant Temperature sensor is a common criminal in this kind of espionage. 14$ off of Amazon and 1 day shipping in my area.

Honestly I would invest in a code reader. An easy one to use is is Bluedriver, it's cheap and you use an app on your cellphone to read the codes. It's worked for me in the last 10 years I've been using them. It's better to invest in a reader and eliminate 90% of the tinkering involved in trying to diagnose it yourself.

I can't remeber if 96 had the OBDI or OBDII, so make sure you are getting the right reader for your ride. it's in all honesty the best tool investment you can get.
