My first reaction is brakes every time then turn if need be.

lucky we don't have those :D

Exactly plus when your romping through the desert you better be paying full fucking attention.

Sorry about the accident. A squirrel ran in front of my truck this morning, and I ran it over. I felt bad. Well.....bad and hungry.

A lady nearly killed my family and I by slamming on her brakes and swerving in the middle of the road for a little wiener dog that ran across the street.

It's a dog for god sakes. What's more valuable your safety/life or the dog? What would of happened if your truck hit the pole about 2-3ft further towards the front of the truck?

Personally, I'd simply brake and if the vehicle doesn't stop in time, sorry dog. I'm not going to put myself or other drivers around me in danger for a dog. They taught us that in driver's education years ago. Don't swerve cause you don't know if there's somebody next to you that very instant. If it's a big animal and you can stop in time, turn the wheel slightly so you contact the animal at an angle and the animal will less likely to go into your windshield.

Probably would have done the same amount of damage and not been real good for the dog either.

I'm glad you're OK, and I'm sorry to hear about the truck (and the sign).

It is things like this that I think of when people are decrying the VSC system. Chances are good that you would have been able to maintain control with VSC.

You could've been killed. Even though it would be horrible to kill a dog, it's better to hit the animal that runs in front.

Your first instinct was to swerve...why not hit the brakes ?

Accidents suck. No truck for a while. Hope the repairs are as good as new.

Last time a deer ran in front of me I slammed on the brakes from 55mph to 35mph before the thud. Deer flipped around, but luckily no damage to the truck. However, it was broad daylight & I knew it was a deer.

Can't wait to get a steel plate bumper like ARB. Next time I'll hit the gas.

Depends on the animal I'd rather hit a small tree than a big moose!

Depends on the person and how good they are at dealing with high stress situations. In my old hot hatch, I would slam on the non abs brakes and swerve hard all day for animals, first instinct. The car handled great and had excellent steering and brake feel. But now with my tacoma I drive very differently instinctively. I'll do very little steering input and mostly just hit the brakes. Luckily every time it's happened to me in the tacoma it's been nothing larger than a raccoon.

To the OP, good luck with fixing/getting a new truck.
