I am going to say if it is your dads truck, it should be his call. Wouldn't you want that if it were yours? If your asking us, you already know what you should do. Talk to your Dad and tell him the whole truth. And that includes if you were doing something you shouldn't have been doing. The only thing any of us can control is what we do. If you do the right thing, it's easy to look in the mirror in the morning. Man up & let your father know everything. Don't leave out ANYTHING then let him decide. His truck, his call...

    Hate to say it BUT...

If your laws are anything like Florida here is some bad news.

Parking lots are not within reporting standards therefore it is person vs person. With that being said if you let the other person leave the area without an exchange of information and filling out some sort of documentation then GOOD LUCK. Most of these turn into insurance nightmares with your word against their word..

I hope this has a better outcome than most and it sucks about your truck :(

let insurance deal with it. It is the easiest way.

Let everyone involved know....you parents, and him that you want insurance to deal with it....

If you insist on letting him pay, make sure you have something represent a contract of some sort.

or when you get the estimate, insist on a check written for the high side of the estimate to be given back when he has paid for the damage.

but my recommendation is call insurance and let them deal with it

Alot of us older farts have been through this before. Learn from our mistakes and report it immediately. I made the same mistake you are dealing with right now. A teenager hit my car when I was younger and said his dad would pay for any damage. His dad basically told me to pound sand when I called and I had no recourse.

Tell the guy you want his insurance info. Here in MD it is illegal to withhold your insurance info if you are involved in accident. I would just make his insurance pay for it, tough shit for him.

If you don't report it your an idiot.

I use to drive a piece of crap $1,000 truck and didn't report being hit. You have a nice truck, you need to report it. Don't let this guy control you. He owes you, you owe him nothing. You don't even need to talk to him again just tell your insurance and they will take care of it.

At the very least, file a police report about the collision. Where I live, if the damage is over $2000, you need to have a police report in order for a body shop to look at it. This will cover you if you need to involve insurance.

Two years ago, I was side-swiped by a van that pulled out from the curb and struck me in the pass. side rear wheel. Damage didn't look like much, but come to find out that she shifted my rear axle a couple degrees. Had to get everything straightened out on the frame rack. She didn't want to get insurance involved either, stating her husband will pay out of pocket. Initially, I was fine with it, but filed a police report anyways. Once the husband had a quote for damages, he flipped shit and told me to forget it. My insurance said if I didn't have a police report I would have been SOL, but because I filed one that day, they will take the claim. In the end, I had my truck fixed, and got a settlement for bodily harm (that I didn't expect). So please, at the very least, file a police report to cover your own butt, in case the offender decides to tell you to screw off once they see the estimate.

were you driving the car while it was hit? If it was parked its comprehensive not collision since you were not driving and rates will not go up.

Don't hide it. Turn it into insurance and let them do what your parents pay them to do. This is NOT something to hide from them. Porn is something to hide from your parents.

    thanks everyone for replies!!
So i told my dad, he didn't get mad but told me he is going to the auto repair shop with the kids dad now and if he doesnt cooperate then he'll involve insurance, but it seems like he is. he goes to my school so theres not really a way for him to run away. I showed this to my dad, he was more mad about me telling a forum before i told him..

Your parents shouldn't be pissed for something that wasn't your fault. Explain you where parked and a dude hit you, and left his info. Contact him and make him pay for the repare. If you do it yourself, you'll just mess it up more. Body work isn't easy.

Guy was nice and left his info. He could have made it a hit and run and then he'd never know who smoked his truck.

You can report it to your insurance and still have the guy pay out of pocket. Trust me...if insurance doesn't have to pay and do paper work...they won't.

    This happened twice to me.

Yeah - you need to report this right away - especially since it happened in a parking lot. Insurance companies have differnent rules about determining fault when collisions happen in parking lots. A lot of times they will just declare it a 50%/50% fault if it happened in a parking lot and the involved parties stories differ. Heck, a guy backed into my Tacoma in a Walmart parking lot about 9 months ago - and the insurance company (we both had the same ins. company) declared it both of our fault - even though my story and his story matched exactly. I was all the way out of my parking spot, fully parallel in the driving aisle - when this guy made contact with the back of my truck - he wasn't even half way out of his spot yet. The insurance company said because it was in a parking lot and we were technically both in reverse when the vehicles made contact - it was 50% both our fault. What a bunch of total bullshit. It ended up raising my insurance about $10/month. Report it now to your insurance company - and make sure they are clear that you were not in the truck and your truck was stationary when hit.

Several years ago when I was married, my ex-wife side swiped a door that left a scrape and a small dent on another car. The final repair cost on that was about $1200 so your estimate is not too bad considering that your damage looks a lot worse. I let the insurance take care of it which probably explains why our repairs were around the same cost.

I would tell my parents if someone did that to me at school. And claim insurance. Think about it this way. If you tell your parents and give them the story, the outcome will be way better then your dad walking to "his truck" you stated above and seeing a big ass dent on the side. Then you know you'll have to tell them and they might think your lieing or something, which would be a way worse ending..

Wish the POS who ran what I am guessing was a boat trailer into the side of my truck would've left a note. Only thing I got was a big dent.
