I expected to see your bed demolished after seeing the Kia. Looks like you got a really expensive dent lol.

If they don’t total it, I would see about getting a nice steel rear bumper

I (a drunk did it, technically) totaled my '15 DCLB TRD Sport with 70k miles on it. Straight on frontal impact, bags deployed and significant front damage with engine cradle section of the frame displaced and between the collision estimate and the adjuster add ons they deemed it a total loss by just $1800. Truck was valued $28,300. They did add value for newly installed tires and suspension work, but that only added about $1500 when pro rated... Anyway, my point is that depending on your state total loss threshold you might be disappointed that it's not deemed a total loss. In Michigan, my insurance provider said they would not repair frame damage, only replace the frame, which obviously increased the repair estimate, but that in other states they will repair frame damage depending on multiple factors. I learned a ton about how the process works and how auto insurance works on potential total loss claims.

What insurance company do you have? I don’t think I’ve heard a insurance company add for add ons, I wouldn’t want to drive on a repaired frame it can’t have the same structural integrity and I bet a good lawyer could make a case about that

Allstate. Tires and suspension work are add-ons? The adjuster noticed the brand new tires and asked if I had receipt for them, I told him I had just replaced the struts and springs and he said to send him the receipts for for everything I had recently done. If I had paid Toyota dealer for oem parts and labor it would have cost even more.

I suspect that is why they would not repair the frame.

Everyone is in a hurry, I usually drive the speed limit or slightly above and I get passed more often than not.

I got an update today. It isn't totaled, but if I want to, I can take the insurance money and the body shop can sell it as is for a total of me walking away with $22k. Any idea what the truck is actually worth? KBB says 25k avg private party, and I can't really find anything nearby to compare to.

We'd all like to think our insurance companies would treat us nice, that being said, You should at least talk to an attorney. Maybe go see a doctor too, whiplash is a real thing and you might not realize how it can affect you down the road. We had to learn that the hard way. Insurance is all about saving themselves money.

That doesn't make any sense really.

Who gives a fuck what the body shop can do, they are paid to do a job if there's no job all they should be entitled to is any teardown labor.

I'd be asking for more fucking money and i'd be asking to see CC comps. If KBB is $25k i'd be shooting for more hoping to land on 25k. Again fuck the body shop, who gives a fuck if they want to make money selling the truck as a rebuilder. It sounds like some adjuster has his dick in the payout pie with the help of a body shop.

Thanks for the advice. I've already seen a doctor, as my upper back was killing me a couple days later

I know the owner of the body shop, I don't believe he's screwing me. I'm sure he's making a little on the sale, but he's doing me a favor by selling it so I don't have to wait 2-3 weeks for it to be fixed to then have to deal with selling a recently smashed truck.

Honestly, all I wanted was to keep my 16 for 2 more years with no payments and then buy a 23. I had the conversation with my wife literally days before the accident :annoyed:

    I guess I don't get it.

I'd be pushing for a total loss and pushing for $25k plus

When this happens you don't have to worry about what happens to the truck, it's the insurance company's problem.

$3k is $3k and my grandma you to say get all you can

Let me clarify, I admit the situation isn't as simple as it should be.

The truck isn't totaled. The initial estimate was $12k in damages, plus whatever he finds after taken apart. Problem is, the lady at fault didn't have enough coverage so I'm going through my own insurance. Apparently, I have an aftermarket policy (I verified this with my insurance), so his $12k got knocked down to $8k with shitty knockoff parts.

They're going out next week to assess the additional damages, but it'll probably only be a few grand more.

    So I have 3 options:

    1. Let him fix it, then I sell it.

    2. Take the insurance money and sell it smashed myself

    3. Let him sell it and walk away $3k short of avg KBB

KBB private sale is a guess. Trade in is trade in. Take the $ and run. If private party is $25k and it's repaired nobody that knows anything will pay you $25k. If you are not struggling for $ and can absorb a hit take the $ and lose the stress.

Thanks. Edmunds is within a few hundred of KBB. NADA (may be a user error) I only see retail/trade in/local dealer listings

Pretty much my thoughts. We can afford to eat the loss. I hate to, but it's that or lie about the damage/sell it, which is shitty/adds new stress

When my 2013 was totaled I got a payout for all the modifications on the truck excluding those I removed and took with me. I had receipts for everything, so I got a pro-rated amount. They valued the cap I paid $370 for (and didn't have a receipt) at $900. I ended up getting just about $3,000 additional on top of what the truck was book valued at.

@UberDingu if you buy a new car, pony up for the new car replacemenet option if your insurance has it. In my case, when I bought my 2016 my local indie agent mentioned it in passing and it was a $50.00 add on to my policy. At the time my wife had a 4 month old Mazda CX-5 and when I was told about that add-on, I threw in on her car figuring why not, lightning won't strike twice. Three months later taking it to it's first oil change I had someone fly out of a side street into the main road, put me up on two wheels and then into a telephone pole (0/10, would not recommend). I ended up getting MSRP + sales tax when insurance wrote it off. I think we actually profited about $3,500 on that car over 7-8 months of ownership.

Thanks for the advice, I'll be sure to ask about it when I add the new truck (once I find it lmao). My wife got a new vehicle this year too, so it's definitely worth looking into

That sounds like a terrifying ordeal, glad you came out of it ok/the insurance took care of you
