He's not trading in to save gas, he's trading to get a more offroad capable truck.

Basically I say if you really think you'd use it and enjoy it more, why not.

Hell I came from an 86 4Runner 4-banger and upgraded to the 4.0L V6. To be honest now that gas prices are back up I'm wondering why LOL. Then again, a snail was faster than my old 4Runner. Sure got plenty of looks in that bad boy when I was floored in 3rd gear cruising at a fat 45mph over the high mountain passes. But speed isn't everything.

I traded in a 5.7 trd tundra for my SR5 2.7ltr 4x4 manual. With a few performance mods I love the truck and have no problem with power at all. Truck is great off road (better than my tundra). Keep in mind I do not tow anything although I have had up to 900lbs in the bed over a 150mile drive and no problems.

Just wondering why you want more power and 4x4 if you are not going to be doing a lot of offroading.

I think the truck you got now might surprise you and get you through enough for what you might ask it to do as long as your not trying to rock crawl or something. And you may have the added help of one of the differential systems toyota offers, the ATRAC or LSD.

Unfortunately for buyers, you may have a hard time finding sellers dumping used Tacomas due to high gas prices. Just check the resale value. Besides, there really is not much difference in gas mileage:

    2.7 4cyl auto = 19mpg city/25mpg hwy
    4.0 V6 auto = 16mpg/21mpg

I have a 4-cylinder and get about 24-25 MPG. The 2.7L engine is a good engine. It has adequate power and torque, is smooth for a large 4-banger and is very reliable. Do you really need a 4 X 4? If so you're stuck getting a new truck but you will lose a lot of money when you trade in.

I find some of this post very invalid. Just because a 4 banger is fine for you doesn't mean its enough for everyone. What if someone needs a bigger towing capacity? Or they just enjoy the extra power?

Huge? Using the city/hwy average of both, 12K miles per year, and $4 gas, the difference is $412.78 annually, or $34.40 a month. Not huge in my book.

Ahhh... the old "compensate for the little dick" comment. That's original.

In the end it is up to you whether you want to trade or not. IMO if you dont have any issues with the money side of it, and you really want it...why not get it?

I once owned a 4 cyl. 2.7L Taco and it was a huge jump in power. 4cyl. Taco's aren't bad if you're not hauling anything, yet for the price of gas it's definitely a keeper! I once pulled a Uhaul trailer from Washington state to California and it was dreadful!!! This is why I own a 6 cyl. Taco now. As stated from previous comments, I recommend you wait until the summer surge of gas prices decline before purchasing a 6 banger. One last piece of advice: Although a 6cyl 4X4 is nice, why purchase it if you're not hauling anything or 4-wheeling? However, if 4-wheeling is what you do, by all means, GO FOR IT!!! Good luck!

OP, just bite the bullet and get what you really want. No need to regret your purchase everytime a V6 DoubleCab Tacoma 4x4 with a load exhaust and 3inch lift pulls up to you at the stoplight. Disagreements over fuel savings is an oxymoron if you are going to slap some A/T 33's and a lift on it. Rather have too much truck than not enough..

As for real life figures...the difference is huge. I don't see very many V6 owners who truly average over 16-18. If the V6 guys BABY it on the highway, they might be able to squeeze out 20 MPG's...if the 4 banger guys do the same thing, they will easily get over 25. Personally, I can get over 30 on highway trips, and the lifetime average for my truck is over 26 MPG's. So to me, the difference in fuel economy is huge, especially considering that I drive 20K+ a year. It ends up being about $1,500 a year. Not to mention that insurance rates are lower, and there is less maintenance to be done on the 4 banger. On top of that, I have been able to haul anything and everything including over 1,000 lbs a few times...but I do not tow anything.

Just using the numbers the guy with the monster schlong threw out there. You can rationalize your choice anyway you want to, but it's hard to argue when I did the math on the guy's own numbers.

..and there's a bunch of us v6 guys who long for a v8:D which proves again you always want more. OP the 4-banger in a truck pushing 4000lbs will be a compromise BUT the tradeoff is a tank of a motor that is mil-standard, gas mileage, and cheaper maintainance costs.
On the other hand, that v6 will give much more driver confidence and satisfaction, give the truck more substance, do bigger work, and won't have to work as hard just to move the truck itself.
Then you can long for a v8 like the rest of us:)

Still miss the 318 from my old Dakota. I would have bought the v8 if it was available. My hopes is that everyone else runs to electric so I can have all the gas I need. I would rather have more motor then normally needed then to need more motor and not have it.

I cant say much i had a 07 4cyl white literally had it for 6 months and found my new Blue 6cyl already lifted with wheels and tires! (both manuals) and got great trade in and only $1200 more than what i paid for the 4cyl......but i will say the gas mileage isn't the same...:(
