thats crazy...mine cost like alittle over 200 with the aal install as well...that's ok some shop i went to that kinda dealt with just leaf packs to get my longer pack bolts, quoted me like 600 bucks just to do a simple AAL install...now that's insane...i'm going OME this time around, so i'm hoping i have enough guts to try the install myself this time, but i will take my fronts to the shop cause i don't wanna try a spring compressor....honestly though is it better to say have a good shop install the lift? i only ask cause when i traded in my 06 the dealer wanted to make sure the lift wasn't just installed by some joe off the street....so i'm wondering if i needed say warrenty work if the dealer maybe alittle more accepting of my lift knowing that a rep. shop did the work?

I don't mean to hijack...but are the 5100's really worth it. I would think that by adjusting the shock to it tallest setting to get the three inches would make it ride rough. Am I wrong? I am wanting to get a three inche lift for mine but was thinking of springs. I do not have the tsb in the rear and since the wty is out the dealerships are not wanting to do the work. Would a AAL lift kit solve the problem?

Had my fronts installed for $100 at a local garage. 1.5 hrs in labor. I tried myself but gave up cause I couldn't get the struts past the sway bar. Asked my mechanic how he did it and he said he unbolted the front of of the sway bar from the frame and that gave the strut just enough room to clear the sway bar using a little "persuasion".

I was quoted by one place $500 & another place quoted $430. I plan on doing the rear myself & will have to wait on the front. $360 & $280 for the front by the same 2 places.

I was quoted about 175 to install the 5100s at an independant shop. I took them off myself and brought them in to switch the shocks and he charged me $48, which was fair to me since he had a shop full of work at the time and still turned these around for me in about an hour.

For the $200 quoted, you might consider getting a reasonably good hydraulic spring compressor (about $150, google or eBay), and doing them yourself if you don't have a second vehicle, or access to someone who does. I thought about this, but I had access to a second vehicle and couldn't justify 150 for a tool that only gets used once every 4-5 years.

I too have thought long and hard. I've found a good compressor, too expensive for what probably is a one time job. $150 and my time vs $200 done. I think it would be cheaper to dish out the $200 for the swap and alignment ($69 for alignment) and save myself the time off of work (since I work for myself, the cost is my normal billable hourly rate).

The rears will be put on tonight after I get home, I don't propose they will take longer than 30 minutes to swap out the two shocks and 4 bolts.

    1. Sure you did, that's why you posted your post and not in response to the thread title.

    2. I didn't imply that I was setting the shocks to the maximum lift, nor is that what was being discussed.

    3. You are incorrect on the adjustment of the front shocks, they provide up to 2.5", not 3".

    4. If you want a 3" lift, there are thousands of posts and hundreds of threads on this vary issue. A sticky in the 2nd Gen Mods and Tips is provided there for your reading.

    5. If this reply seems crappy, well it's meant to be. Sorry, but please try and utilize other alternatives to hijacking a thread, saying "i don't mean to hijack", and expect the OP to give you some grief over the issue. Especially when anyone who is a member can start a new thread.

I forgot the 200 included the alignment. If this is a reputable shop, my opinion is that this is a good price. Sounds like it equates to 2 hrs labor and an alignment so they're not lowballing you such that you'll get a crappy job.

They seem reputable, we've used them for a while now without any major incidents. A couple of minor issues, but more in regards to parts not being available more so then something the shop did.

They've done alignments on my VW and it drives just fine. I'm probably going to give them the shot.

I would consider the $200 a decent price if the alignment was included. I got my fronts done for $150 with the alignment.
