My frame had to be replaced from this much lighter exchange.

My surmise as well. Or just fucking off. So tired of people doing this shit.

OP, best get checked out at the emergency room no matter how you feel today. I don't like to push but my wife got rear ended at much lower impact and wound up with a major concussion.

Yours took a direct hit to the hitch, which in turn transferred all of the energy to the frame just forward of the end of the hitch. It collapses the frame in an area that cannot be repaired. So even though your impact appears to have been less severe, it was in an area more likely to do damage that requires frame replacement. Doesn't mean that OP's frame is OK or is repairable, just that yours was more likely to require replacement.

Honestly, the impact didn't feel that hard. I've had concussions before (plural... I was a very active kid) and things go "white" for a few seconds while you're in la-la land. Nothing like that in this case, but i know to remain aware of any symptoms of shenanigans.

The same thing happened to my 21. Except the impact was a little harder than what yours looks like. The angle of the bend was more extreme, as well, and they totaled it.

The driver side half of the frame is bent at the rear. It looks like it might be repairable, but the bed is definitely out of square, and I just noticed that it actually dented the cab, too. I thought it had just marked the paint, but it also got a deep dent from the bed smashing into it.

Insurance company is most likely gonna total it. They do it all the time for frames that are bent from bumpers being folded under in a rear end collision. EASY repair, but that's how they make money, by justifying rate hikes for minor damage.

I've bought two Tacos with similar damage from Copart and repaired them in my driveway with common tools for less than $500 on each truck. I sold one for a profit and am still driving the other three years later with no issues at all. I bought both trucks for less than half of what retail on them was. One of the benefits is that they were cheap enough that I don't need to carry collision insurance.

If it was mine I'd get the payout and fix it. The bed side will pull out easily. Replace the bumper and any plastic parts, and maybe the tailgate(?) and drive it.

It's an easy repair if the frame is a c-channel design in that area. If it's a complete box, it's not. Once it folds up and kinks, that's it. Anyone who says that can be repaired safely or properly is incorrect.

Everyday I sit stopped on the offramp I think is this my day. Just to many distractions in cars these days and in my state it seems 10-20% of the population is driving around smoking weed they just picked up from the local store.

Whenever I'm in that situation I try if possible to tap on my brake pedal fast and frequent. Also turn on flashers. Hopefully that wakes up what's behind me. Look in mirror to make sure a line up has formed safely behind.

    It’s very likely.
Years ago, I had a 2004 Ford Explorer that took a direct hit to the trailer hitch. My bumper sustained minor cosmetic damage. However, the grille and radiator of the other vehicle (Ford Fiesta) completely imploded.

I agree OPs frame may have taken some damage, but not necessarily so. Definitely should get it inspected by someone who knows what they are looking at.

Bad driving isn’t accidental, we’re mostly fortunate it usually ends up in a close call with only honking and gesturing as consequences. Sorry for your misfortune.

Similar thing happened to me in my first Ranger. Someone following too close and we both hit the brakes when traffic suddenly stops. My rear bumper went up and their front went down with my hitch skewering their Cavalier’s grill. CHP had to pry us apart but only a few scratches to my bumper. Since I had left enough room and their car was light I didn’t plow into the vehicle ahead.

Sorry to hear about your Taco, and hope you are doing well. Makes me cringe every time I see one of these posts - seeing how easy it is for the truck to be totaled.

Now back in the day… a Toyota could take a hit. My ‘89 got rear-ended by one of these bad boys. (Older couple trying to feed their dog.) Bent my tow hitch forward and folded the bumper down. Not a scratch on any sheet metal. There was a 2” divot dead-center on their bumper. We both drove home like nothing happened. (My frame was repaired, and I had the truck 9 more years.)

Time to break out the welder and put some beef back in this Taco. :welder: :taco:

I've had too many close-calls for that very reason. And it wasn't me on the phone.
I've come to believe that cell phone have become a blessing and a curse...
