It seems like every thread about salt, rust, or rust prevention has at least one guy bragging about living in a state that doesn't use salt or even get snow. I dedicate this post to all those bastards.

I live in Missouri. Here, we get just enough snow to make our lives miserable for a few days a year, but not enough snow for anyone to make a living by becoming good at applying salt.

These are pictures of the parking lot at work. That white stuff isn't snow but you'd be excused for thinking it was because of how thick it was applied. This is what you get when you hire the cheapest toothless tweaker to clear your lot.

A little overkill for an hour's worth of mild sleet. You should have seen the line at the carwash today. IMG_20161220_151834.jpg IMG_20161220_151849.jpg

How long after the snowfall is that pic taken? There is no snow on the grass at all.

    4 days.

There never really was any snow. They saw that 1/2" of snow/sleet was in the forecast and overreacted.

For a 1/2" where I live. The snow removal crews wouldn't even bother starting their vehicles.

I wish that was the case here.

On a side note, it looks like most of the comments so far are pretty dismissive. I'm not actually bitching in the usual sense. I just thought it was overkill and people might like to see/read something other than the hundredth new thread about transmission issues, differential problems, or questions about how large of a tire you can run without a lift.

What is the biggest tire I can run without a lift on stock DCSB TRD OFFROAD suspension? I like the Toyo open country m/t theyre sick and my buddy has them on his 2500HD. Hoping I can get some mounted. Thanks in advance.

The roads have turned white from all the salt they dump on the road. My blazing blue TRD OR is a shade of gray white.

We went to a shopping center two weeks ago and it looked like a pretzel gone wild. 1" cubes of salt everywhere. And worse they were repainting the lines at the same time. F'n brilliant guys painting the parking lot two weeks before Christmas, and while it's salted. I stayed by the truck while the wife shopped, in case I needed to run some dumb-ass over.

Yup, we got an early start to the winter here in Michigan. The roads and lots have been coated with salt since the day I picked up my truck from the dealer.. and will be coated for the next 4 months.

Fortunately, I got 5 cans of fluid film on the undercarriage. I'm hoping that gives me some sort of barrier.

Some cars seem to resist the corrosion better than others.. but I'm slightly worried about the Taco considering the huge corrosion recall that Toyota did just a few weeks ago.

So maybe a stupid question and I know I will probably get some flames...
Growing up and living in Southern Calif, I never saw snow until I was 18 and have never driven in it. Now I am 66 and have my new truck and plan on moving to the eastern sierras. I probably will get into snow at some point. I doubt that there is any protection on the truck but I wouldn't know what it looks like anyway.

So, how do I proactively protect my truck? I see that people have yearly maintenance to perform on the under coating, when to do that? What type works the best? Any good advice as to the best brand? Any thing I am missing?

    Thanks

not sure they would even mention that in the forecast here. When I lived in Caribou Maine it seemed like an inch a day was the norm, as they would just say flurries and by the end of the week it would be a foot of snow.

Best part of winter, when you can drop a fry on the ground and it tastes better.

Lots of people on here, including me, use fluid film to undercoat our trucks. It is relatively cheap, easy to apply, and provides protection in a oil-type residue. It's not oil, but a thick lanolin based greasy substance that keeps water out. If you have a shop nearby to get it applied, it would be good. Krown is another undercoating substance. You just don't want to do the undercoat stuff that is a hard drying substance as it eventually cracks, salt and water hide underneath it and corrode your truck under the undercoating. Stuff like fluid film can be removed if you want to clean/touch up your truck underside. I cleaned my truck up this fall and applied the fluid film before the cold started setting in. In spring, I will probably clean it up and reapply another layer. It has a smell that will last a few days, and will make a mess, so I would definitely apply it in the grass! It will leave your underside with a slightly wet look, so you can see if you missed any spots.
