You don't have to get MaxTrax.... there are a few good boards for around $100.

Last weekend, I was pretty well stuck in some not very deep, but stupid heavy melt snow:

    IMG_09361.jpg

I eventually worked my way up after a well built Jeep came by and made some fresh tracks. The QS OR broke free easily using CC / MTS. We used MaxTrax to get the JKU that was with us moving out of the ditch on the right.

Chains would have been the only helpful thing to keep us moving, but folks went up another couple corners and circled back saying that it was just way worse.

MaxTrax, or similar, are now on the ever-expanding wishlist.

But locker and crawl control can take you way further than the hood scoop. I know cause I read it on TW:stirthepot:

I had my scuba tank with me, but you don't air down in snow. You want to cut through. This stuff was melt snow. Heavy and slick. Floating on top would have been worse.

Hahaha! The other Taco had three and four wheels spinning at different times. I got free a few times without CC / MTS or a locker and was spinning all four wheels at times. But, the tools on that OR did make it easier.

In the end, my Sport, the OR, and the JKU with more aggressive that stock tires that was with us all did about the same.

This was the third time out in snow where I couldn't get TRAC to fire off in 4Hi or 4Lo. It seems to need more differential wheel spin. This only time I got it going was the time that I put the right side on snow and the left on pavement.

I grew up in PA with all the snows and seen some snow here in WA but not often. With the incline and wetness, I couldn't keep the momentum.

Tires, esp dedicated winters, might have helped, but really, we needed chains. I didn't need them in the low lands this winter, but will grab a set for next year.

For what we saw, I was actually expecting mud and not snow. Also, we were in about 10mi at about 3,600ft. That was a lot further that I was expecting us to get.

I am planning on more aggressive tires when these stockers wear out.

A couple months back on fresh snow that was twice as deep was no problem at all climbing even steeper grades. Just one of those things.

Buy tires now and sell the stock tires. Save money that way. That’s how I justified It, at least.

Chains?! How quaint, everyone else uses those, why should Taco’s do it?

You can either get traction boards or if you have a lot of big trucks that go off road and in snow for commercial purposes, buy some old mud chains (the get stretched out and don’t fit anymore and can be had for scrap.. You don’t even need to put the chains on, you can use them like traction boards and climb out of the muck, snow melt or ice and throw the chains back in backof the truck.
    Any tire can be overwhelmed.

I'd rather get Maxtrax (or similar) and a shovel in the bed. I'd hate driving around in those mud tires.
