I am looking for an aftermarket GPS with a large screen for my 2017 Tacoma. Does anyone make a mount that will fit the existing camera mount or do I need some sort of dash mount. I need something I can take with me and use in my work vehicles (which change frequently) also but will be primarily used in my Tacoma.

Thanks, but I need a GPS for when I am out of cell range, which is most of the time (I live in a remote area in Canada).

google maps will let you download a certain sized area of maps to store offline. actually using the gps doesn't require network.

He's looking for a stand alone GPS. Stop suggesting google maps or a cell phone. Can't you read?

To OP: You can probably coddle one together by buying a go pro mount and seeing what adapters you can make to fit a GPS unit. They might offer something you could make work.

With that being said you also have other options. RAM mount makes GPS mounts and I know people here on tacomaworld have made RAM adapters for mounting to different areas, be it the vent, dash, etc.

I believe GARMIN, makes a GPS Satellite navigation device. You can also use it to make a distress calls, which might not be a bad thing if your are so remotely located.

Tom tom app has maps on your phone, no need for cell service.

Also, the gopro mount location is a bad spot for a gps, many stand alone suction mounts for windshield.

neat, you didn't read that his reasoning was that he frequently doesn't have cell signal, which means downloaded maps on a phone would work. perhaps he didn't know that was an option and the 2 of us that suggested it are merely providing an alternative? having offline maps on your phone means 1 less device to have to carry and charge.

Yes, I can read and was addressing the primary concern which was no cell service. Hoping to add something useful to the conversation rather than digging on someone.

I haven't paid much attention to my GoPro mount, but I saved this from a previous post about the same question.
I believe it will do what you need. There is also a version with some hardware.

I don't have the gopro mount but do have a garmin's top shelf Driveluxe 51. It sits as low as possible on the windshield. I love it. So many things it can do that a phone app can't. IMO, I think the gopro mount location does not lend itself to a convienient look at the map on the gps. I really don't have to take my eyes off the road to see my GPS now.

Thanks for supplying me with some options. I tried the TomTom app out of curiosity and it is missing 40% of the roads and trails I use. Google maps does not show about 25% of the trails and roads I use. The main reason I need a dedicated GPS is that I am a scientist and I use GIS to create my own maps (for research roads) that I overlay onto TOPO Canada maps which I then load into my GPS. I found a nice truckers GPS from Magellan that I can load GIS maps (which I or one of my colleagues create) and has a 7 inch screen. I do realize many are just trying to help but some of the trails I use barely show up on satellite or any other commonly available tools.

    Thanks again everyone.

Just to let everyone know, I found a RAM dash mount that works great with the Magellan GPS (the camera mount turned out to be a non-starter, bad location). I also have a satellite phone and a UHF and VHF radio in my truck to communicate with logging trucks, search and rescue and my employer. I just wanted to give some context about how remote my work locations are. Sometimes I have to use the ice roads since there are no all-weather roads in these areas.
Oh, and by the way, so far the Tacoma has been great.

This setup has worked well, although it does have its drawbacks. Let me know if you’d like more info.
