Just read an article on GPS tracking on some of the new cars by the makers. You guys have taken these trucks apart numerous times, and I was wondering ---Do Tacomas have any internal GPS tracking device??

This is the statement that created the GPS stir: Ford Vice President Jim Farley said, “We know everyone who breaks the law; we know when you’re doing it. We have GPS in your car, so we know what you’re doing. By the way, we don’t supply that data to anyone.”

Not sure about GPS, but all new vehicles sold since 2009 or so have "black boxes" that can be downloaded by insurance companies and probably dealerships in the event of an accident or claim... GPS tracking wouldn't surprise me much, especially in vehicles equipped with a GPS system. Welcome to the post-911 America. Someone is always watching.

They do have a Black Box. When you buy your car you have to sign paperwork stating that you have been informed that your car has a black box in it (at least the last 5-6 cars I've bought). They also told me when I bought my truck back in Oct that the 3/36k warranty is now subject to the circumstances at which the breakage occurs. Not really sure what that means in the grand scheme of things but it seems to me that Toyota (along with other car makers) are trying to limit the liability towards themselves.

As far as GPS tracking??? I dunno. I have no solid info on that one way or another.

Many times the dealer will install a GPS device that can be programmed to locate/shut down your vehicle. Quite often they are installed after the factory, but before the dealer.

These devices are usually associated with vehicles that are financed with less than "stellar" credit rated purchasers. They are usually quite easy to find and look very "hack" when you do find them.

I forget the name of the common one I see on occasion.

I would be very pissed if I found a foriegn device connected to my trucks wiring with cheap ass scotch lock wire connectors.

Event Data Recorders are a total different animal. Yes our trucks have those and at present they are not GPS enabled. Yet.

    A little a this, a little a that...
If you have navigation, obviously you have GPS. But other than that, i wouldn't be so sure.

And if Ford says they have the info, but don't share it, that's gotta be total BS.

You are "receiving" GPS not broadcasting it with a Nav system. Services such as OnStar broadcast your position.

It doesn't really matter I mean I think the black box is a good thing because it helps determine who is at fault in an accident but on the other hand they should just not install anything like it.

A wrench I know said that nearly all the export tacos have a black box and GPS. He bought a Aussie repo that was right hand drive not left and it had one. Not sure if it was active on or activate by customer. GPS was from an aftermarket manuf. called Optimas? That made some for fleet vehicle tracking. According to him the install was kinda crappy. So I guess I’ll have to wrap my head and taco in aluminum foil

All of the "buy here, pay here" used car lots install them to make it easier to repossess the car if you get behind on payments.

If you have the SOS button on the ceiling of your cab, you are being tracked by GPS. You can opt out of Toyota sharing that information. I believe it started with the 2020 3rd gen refresh.

It's not BS and it's not for law enforcement or driver safety etc....it's a whole other revenue stream for automakers, selling your private data to the highest bidder without anyone's consent.

Subaru is probably the worst offender for this right now.

If you drive a 2nd gen or an early 3rd gen lower trim without navigation, adaptive cruise etc, you're fine

You should care purely based on principle alone

This is how we got here in the first place, people not caring about their rights

    It’s not that I don’t care!
I like having the internet and I like the tech! I’m not a criminal and have no reason to believe they are coming to get me yet.
Yes if I want to give the tech shit up I could be unseen maybe but there’s cameras everywhere and your being watched all the time anyway?
