Graphite wheels on my Sunfire Red Pearl

I plan to replace my 15" 3 spokes with a set of 16" 3 spokes but I would like to freshen them up before installed some AT's. I like the stock look of these wheels, but the clearcoat is coming off a bit on one of them and there is some clear coat fading here and there on one or two of the others. I think I can get the wheels sand blasted for free. Looking at Dupli-color for paint. Colors I'm considering are graphite, silver or somewhere in between. I don't want black. Trying to rejuvenate the original finish is an option too but it seems like it would be the most work.

Any help is appreciated. Pics of IR 1st gens welcome.

What a coincidence Ryan, I just picked up a clean set of 4Runner wheels, and I want to powder coat them matte dark bronze. What I want to do, is take these wheels...

And powder coat them to look similar to the SCS F5...

I have never been good with paint, so I don't mess with it. All I know is powder coating is tougher and lasts longer than paint, also I just want to cry once when I pay for it.

EDIT: I found a recent thread on wheel protectants, and paint was brought up, check it out

Just painted some bronze. Powdercoat isn't magic and can allow water to pass through and start flaking off and is also a pita to touch up. For about $50 including consumables I got almost the same outcome that can easily be touched up. It doesn't matter what you have on there, if you hit a rock with your wheel, it's going through the finish:

I agree with the rock wounds, and repairing powder coating is indeed expensive, I'd cry twice lol. But for me, the truck is an auto, and my DD, so it's not going to see big rocks, just big enough ones that the Subarus can't pass :D

Cool. I really like those 5 spoke 4 runner wheels(they were on my radar when I was hunting 16" wheels). I haven't seen any IR trucks with bronze wheels. I'm interesting in seeing some. I kind of like the idea of painting the wheels myself due to cost savings and easier repair. But I like how powder coating holds up well(as long as no rubbing).

I'm liking this color or a bit lighter. I'm looking for a subtle difference.

Some of the best looking Toyota rims for first gens, imo.

I think matte bronze would look sweet as well. Graphite 2nd place

If this helps some, here's a pic of my old truck with graphite colored wheels with a similar color truck.

You could try the wheel visualizer on the bigotires.com website. Select 'wheels' then 'visualizer'. They have quite a few 16" wheels to look at. You can select vehicle year, model etc. and color.

Ask someone to photo shop the wheels you plan to put on with the color you are thinking. For some reason, I am not picturing Bronze pairing well with the impulse, but I may be way off base.

The visualizer at bigotires.com actually does show the vehicle that you select and then adds the wheels to the vehicle similar to photoshoping

Thanks for the link. The bronze look is awesome, but I think I prefer the silver or graphite wheels.
Thanks for the photo James. Any photos of the wheels on it that are not shadowed? Nice looking truck. What have you gone with now?

Bigotires visualizer is helpful, but I didn't see where you can change the color of the wheels.

I probably have a couple others on my desktop I'll post up tomorrow for you when I have a chance. I still have those same wheels just on a black Tacoma now

    FYI

if you do choose to media blast, prime and paint you need to use Zinc Chromate primer on these alloy wheels.

    Oh and btw...

...please do not insult our trucks. The color, for gods, you and I have is Sunfire Red Pearl (3K4). Not Impulse Red Pearl, the color for mere mortals.

I've only read about the zinc chromate primer on one other thread(on Toyota-4runner.org). Self etching primer seems to be what folks suggest on bare metal. I've stripped off the clear from the face of the wheels and they look really good. But the back of the wheels look rough(I know, who cares, right?) and I'm considering getting only the back side of the wheels sand blasted.

Thanks for correcting me. I'll attempt to change the title of this thread. There was certainly some confusing at the dealer when I purchased some touchup paint. 3K4 is what's on my door tag.

Well then, never mind my comments in this thread since Madjic_Man demoted my truck to 'mere mortal' status. At least I still have my 4Runner wheels :woot:
