See I dunno. I'm going with a tnc Mobilelinkd and at that point what can the D-710 do that the TM-v71a can't? Legitimate question, I know tone can be lost chatting online.

I am a super green HAM operator and only play with APRS... So, take my input with a grain of salt...

I have the mobilelinkd TNC and the D710 all hooked up to a 10.5" samsung tablet running an APRS overlay on backcountry navigator.

I am probably going to use the mobilelinkd on a portable setup (or sell it) and get a serial cable to bluetooth adapter to interface with the tablet. I like using the interface on the D710 to tell if I am transmitting properly and use the mobilelinkd as a bluetooth adapter. I think the D710 streamlines the process and when I am not running the tablet, I still have APRS functionality.

(Sorry about the mess) This is right after install and it is not nearly as obtrusive as it looks.

See for me I'm only concerned about running APRS with a map. So once the tablet is added , it's essentially the same thing, but for $200 less, isn't it?

It probably has the same functionality. But, having the "controls" for the APRS right on the radio is worth the extra coin to me. I also don't think the 71 does cross band repeat which is a feature I really wanted in a radio.

    It does x repeat.

See I'm the exact opposite. I had no urge to use messaging via scroll knob or just look at a heading and speed of other hams. I'd much rather just do it on the tablet or phone. Faster and less hassle.

But as far as being all inclusive it's a super nice rig. I'd just end up using it the same ways as I would with the V71a, which is just for the location services on a map and messaging

I think you'd be better off with the 71 if that's your intended use and don't mind having to fire up two devices and make sure they are talking every time you want to use APRS. Having both the 710 and mobilinked I like having the option to run the 710 and leave the other devices at home.

What mapping software do you plan on using?

Haha yeah. I've always got my cell phone with me so it's no big deal.

I love the Gaia app. Use it every single time I go out. That app has helped me find a ton of trails and makes it really easy to Mark and record trips
