Ugh. First thursday/friday (our weekend shift has thurs/fri off) with a guy who just switched to 3rd from 2nd shift. It's me and him from midnight until 3am and he keeps talking and talking and talking... Argh! :(

That being said I prefer the guy who doesn't stop talking to one of the weekend 3rd shifters that has no concept of personal space and leans in too close when he talks to people.

I try to remember at one point I was the weird IT guy with no social skills when I was in my early 20's...

But anyway how's everyone doing tonight?

Yea. I'm the super anti social guy at work. Everyone knows not to talk to me.lol.
Outside of work I'm not exactly a social butterfly but I'm way more open and social with my friends outside of work. There are probably 2 people here at work that I have invited over to the house.

    Meanwhile....its a balmy 16 degs with a low of 8 degs expected before 7am.
Got a guy to laser cut a plate to mount my shifter on my racing sim rig and I agreed to attempt to swap out a retina display on a MacBook pro for the nurse here at work. Which should be interesting considering they make these things 50% harder to crack open nowadays.

Take the phone apart and disable the ringer. :D

Granted that worked on the old-style phones, not so much for these new fancy ones.

Well, this place seems a bit docile this evening. Am I missing something?...or is it just too cold for anyone to get excited about anything? Speaking of the cold...

I, for one am just tired of hearing how cold it is. And I am really tired of all this touting the wind chill numbers. Those number don't mean shit! Wind chill, the temp the human skin perceives the temperature as air moves across it. WTF is that! Am I gonna be outside in zero degree temps with no clothes on. No! That wind chill number is just a cheap way to dramatize the local weather. Lets grab some attention by citing even colder numbers that what the actual temperature is.

What info does one actually gain by having windchill numbers? Please enlighten me.

Sorry about the rant, its just that every place I went this evening, everyone wanted to talk about the windchill. It means nothing to me.

    Howdy, Rob.

Cool news on my work PC. Finally got Google Chrome installed. Used to have IE as primary browser, but I'm waaaay happy that I get to use something that is so much better.

For the longest time, every time I tried to get it installed, I was told we aren't to do major down loads.

Hopefully I will have less spelling errors. The spell check with IE was just terrible, so I just didn't bother.

Hey Kirk. Welcome back to night shift.

I had to move to different desk/computer in the office for internet stuff. Something's gone wrong in my JAVA application on my main computer. Second night in a row; spent a few hours on phone with help desk folks last night, only to find I have to get one of the computer support folks to come in on night shift to fix it while I'm logged on, or so they tell me. We'll see how soon they get around to that. All these different programs we use seem to end up conflicting, settings adjusted for one application wind up causing problems with another app. I used to be pretty good with the computer stuff when I was running op centers, but any more I don't seem to have the patience to work through all the issues; plus I could probably figure out a lot of problems on my own, but they don't allow privileges like they used to...so much is restricted to access by only sys admin folks. I suppose it's necessary given the threat from hackers, but it sure does frustrate me. I remember when the computers seemed like helpful tools, now it feels like they hold us back almost as much as they help. :notsure: Guess I really am becoming a dinosaur. Sorry this turned into a grumpy old man rant.

On the wind chill thing, other than giving folks a clue to wear the right gear working outside, I agree, it does tend to create a lot of unnecessary hype.

Not so. Sounds like your IT infrastructure and applications are poorly architechted which is pretty much the case at 85-90% of companies now.

exactly ... you sound just like my son ... geek :p

I'm kidding, I know you're right ... it's just irritating. I think a big problem for us is the basic structure and standards are set by Air Force and controlled centrally, but then the MAJCOMS (next command level below AF) have applications that don't keep up with the stuff being pushed from above. I expect part of it is funding as well.

    EDIT: Which part "not so"?

Limiting admin rights does almost nothing to deter and stop hackers in windows environments. Linux, and Unix are a different story.

Let's put it this way if the hacker is new and doesn't know what he's doing then maybe limiting admin rights will make a difference, but then he's probably not going to get through your firewall or come in through a sophisticated virus that can make it past anti-virus programs.

There are reasons for limiting admin access, but it's a toss up. Making everyone an admin can cause issues; but restricting it can cause other issues too. It's just which issues the IT department want to deal with.

Oh and the fact that you work for the government is another layer on the cake. If a hacking story comes out and it's divulged that people have admin rights on their computers the news media in their ignorance would whip the public up into a frenzy, even though as I said admin vs non admin rights has little effect on targeted, intelligent hacks/hackers.

Especially the hackers most likely to target governmental or military infrastructure, who are employed by other countries.

It's not the nerdy teenagers who are hacking now. Yes there are some but the threat of litigation and the knowledge required to avoid detection or be successful at it now requires training and legal protection usually by governments or crime syndicates.
