2 of the jobs I applied to are 830-430/9-5; the other is 24/7 shift work. I'd rather get on days somewhere other than here but the pay is much better on shift.

There in lies the issue. Days are nice (in theory anyway) but shift/nights pays way better in most cases. gotta balance pros and cons.

    Ayup.

Taking this position was actually a lateral move for me, but with the shift differential I'm making 20% more.

It's a nice bump, plus the team I get to work with now is awesome. I couldn't ask for better folks to work with!

My last career change I went from a supervisory role with 6-8 subordinates to an "entry level" position and am already making 20k more on 40hr salary than I was there with overtime.

How often do you guys switch jobs?

I was getting to the age that I needed to start thinking about a place to get my 30 in somewhere, and carpentry just wasn't steady enough all the time.

I like my job, I could probably go to other places to make a bit more, but those places I would be going from a 20 minute drive one way to a 60 minute one way.

I'm on my first job out of college now at 3 years. The new job would be a 60 minute commute vs 25 now kid of like your deal.

As needed I'd say. With there being no more pensions really, there is no incentive to stay in one place unless promotions and career path are good... which is why I'm eyeing other things. :spy:

3 times for me in just a little over 6 years, but all with the same company.

I started out as an operator in the wafer fab; got promoted to process technician 3 years later, now I'm working in IT with our factory automation group.

You're still young then!! You got lots of time! I'm all with you on the commute though, especially for me, that extra 40 minutes would be driving to St Louis, and traffic is hell. Along with all the other extras like crime etc.

We have a 401k that's pretty terrible, that's really one of the only negatives about the job. (Besides the evil cement dust that coated my truck). I'm 38, im going to probably have to work until 70+ by that time, because that's the way Social Security is going. Be nice to know I can retire, go straight to a wheelchair and start shitting myself. :poking:

Thats good then, being with the same company you probably keep all your vacation and benefits. Etc

Luckily the commute would be 2 lesser traveled highways and very little traffic. I have awesome retirement where I'm at now, and the new company has insane retirement as well

I drive about an hour to work. Only donit every 3 days though. I actually like the drive. Gives time to prepare for work and to wind down on the way home.

I think it would help with the winding down on the drive home for me. With my shorter drive now, I'm still going full speed when I get home

I wouldn't mind it at all, if the traffic wasn't bad. There's too many idiots on the road towards the City, too many people on their phones and not paying attention. Disrespectful and Rude people.

I'm on my second out of college; went from Corrections for a little over 7 years now in Probation for the last 3 years. Same state; same pension, kept my seniority, vaca and sick time switching agencies. I get 4 weeks vac, 5 personal days, 11 holidays and 3 raises a year so it's too lucrative to leave. My family is in our 'Forever home' which is only 3 towns over for a 30min back road commute. I would love to stay but there is very little room for advancement.

When I started out over 10 years ago I thought "oh I'll be good making $x per year" then wife and kids happen and you quickly realize that you need to find a way to make significantly more.

    Norwegian Metal artist covers Toto...

He has a lot of really good covers. Interesting mix of metal with songs you wouldn't think. But it'll keep you pumped at 4 am :headbang:
