Hello this is non first gen related. It’s about my 1984 Toyota pickup 4x4 with a solid axle. Is it Normal for it to be having all that grease on the front differential? This is the first time I own a truck like this thanks 8199B487-8778-4B42-9247-C8FB21D826EE.jpgB1B3F86B-911F-4A4D-9816-A09635F8580D.jpg 1A0EACC0-0CCD-42F0-B22A-EFD49ADE655B.jpg

Ok great thanks for the reply. I just wasn’t sure if they have to have the grease showing how it is. But thanks.

Just what are you using to lube in there it should be a Moly grease if I remember not gear oil !!

There are also wipers on there that with age do wear out but your looking at some major work unless your rebuilding the whole axle

Yota Tech is great for that era truck

Yeah I haven’t touched nothing there that’s how it was since I bought the truck. That’s why I’m asking.

Yes that is normal to have grease, Only thing I ever did with mine was clean it and replace the wiper seals. Now what does make me wonder is in your last picture to the left of the oil fill plug what the heck? it looks like it has a giant weld up and the housing looks dented.

When it gets excessive or soupy is when you have an issue

Now that is the one Item I would worry about more than the rest, if that silicone comes off when a branch or bush wipes against it oil loss could be a real issue there and loss of the front drive train not good.

Yeah I’m trying to figure out how to fix that issue. That’s what I get I guess for getting a free truck. Any tips?

well depending on what it worth to you the solid axle truck can be awesome as an off road machine if the rest of the truck is good or worth the time and money start looking for a replacement front axle housing.
If you can do the work yourself great if not start making friends with a few good mechanics and start learning what you need to know so you can see thru the bullshit....

Added: I have seen them welded but yours also looks badly dented and you still will have to pull the axle anyways for best results

A greasy mess around the aptly named "wiper" seal is somewhat normal.
What I see is the possibility of an inner axle seal leaking gear oil into the CV joint cavity. The CV joint wants grease, the gear oil can dilute it. This leads to premature wear of the joint.

Why? I see more "wet" than the normal grease seepage from the wiper. In fact I see drops of "wet" at the ends of the bolts in pics 2 and 3. Unless it's oil from grease that has broken down/separated I would say it's more likely from a leaky inner seal.

    And nice find.

That kit may have some stuff you do not need, such as the backing plate eliminator.

I would recommend checking with cruiser outfitters they have an excellent reputation in the land cruiser community

    http://www.cruiseroutfitters.com/lockers.html

About 1/5 down the page, kit FA9807TWB or kwb

Call them and let them know what your doing and they’ll make sure you have what you need.

That looks so rad with the white steelies and softopper. First time I've lusted for a non-regular cab.
