So, the kind fellas at Jiffy Lube left my 2013 4cyl manual's air box cracked open after they checked my air filter. Obviously, I noticed great throttle response and a throaty sound on my way home.

From what I've read in these forums, most attribute the atrocious throttle response to the electronic gas pedal, but it looks like the air box + upstream hardware may be more to blame. I'm assuming the air filter was still in place due to vacuum from the engine, so no harm was done, and the problem isn't my air filter. Are there any air box and upstream mods that are commonly done to these 4cyls?

Sounds like you need to change the air filter, you could also drill some holes in the top of the air box or spend $300 on a CAI.

The phenomenon is called "screwing up the sensor readings".

I think you are imagining that it's more powerful.

It sounds more powerful, so your subconscious is telling you it is more quick.

Likely this. Most that have had a cold air intake can attest to this. With the increase in growl/noise, you’re often thinking there is better response. Remove the secondary air filter for a bit better air flow. Generally, Toyota’s or at least Tacoma’s in particular are tapped and don’t benefit to a cold air intake like GM and domestics do. Toyota engineers did well from the factory that there’s not much room for HP gains.

If they did well from the factory we wouldnt be looking for more horsepower.

Find an intake that gives actual HP verified by a Dyno. I’ll wait.

If you wanted power, N/A Tacoma’s are not your friend and you bought the wrong truck. Your stock intake is already a ‘cold air’ as it pulls from the inner fender. You gain nothing but resonance sound with an aftermarket intake.

I bought a CAI so I could give myself the illusion that my 4 cyl. is more powerful. Whenever I have a passenger, I floor it after a full stop, and then brag about how much power my truck has. No one believes me, but it's good to hear them laugh.

Keep waiting because no where did i say an intake would give more horsepower. What i was saying was if they had done a better job when the engine was designed (more horsepower) people wouldnt be looking for ways to add more power. It was mainly sarcasm.

I really wish it would be as simple as adding some cheap bolt ons to add more power but as we all know its not and toyota made sure of that.

Maybe ya'll should get together and start a Naysayer's thread, for people that already know everything, that there is to know! I wonder why you bother posting to the rest of us!

Most didn’t join knowing everything. Doesn’t mean we can’t make observations and comments on topics that get brought up over and over. There’s a search function that most don’t take advantage of, leading to a lot of duplicate threads and questions.

Generally, when someone creates a thread with a question, someone with info might respond. That’s how communicating works, isn’t it?

I'm confused.... if you're here reading responses, or you're here asking people to endow you with their knowledge, then why do you question when people comply?

Its way way simpler than bolt-ons, actually.... they offer an option with a larger engine (note that OP selected the 2.7).

Or they couldve given both engines more power. But they didnt do that either.
