Hi there, I'm realitivaly new to TW, and very new to modding trucks (never have done it before), I've changed oil, and air filters, and tires, but nothing like replacing the suspension, and putting in new lights and gizmos and shit.

Anyways, I just bought me a new '18 taco TRD off-road back in July. Went off-roading with some acquaintances, and now I'm hooked.

I'm stumped as to what i should upgrade first (or how to go about it), and need your sage wisdom and guidance to help me in this endeavor.

If I go with suspension first to get a 2" lift (I don't have any in mind atm). should I figure out what I'm going to throw on my truck first (e.g. new front and rear bumper, tonneau cover, bed rack, skid plates, etc.), add up the weight and buy an appropriate suspension system?

Really all I want to do is get better front and back clearance, lift it (that's the suspension right?), get a winch, and make my off road goodies safe and secure so I can go overlanding.

    TLDR.
Need help/your opinion on putting an overland Taco together.

Always account for weight of aftermarket add ons before buying a lift. It depends on the financial order this can be done, but ideally you want all aftermarket weight on while shopping for correct spring/coil rates to account for added weight. Otherwise you'd be changing springs/coils out and changing shock adjustments to account for incremential weight from aftermarket add ons as you build.

with such a general question i would recommend you slow down, spend some time browsing other builds, and then ask more specific questions. you're just gonna get general quick answers here. dial in your focus, it takes time. if you build it up this month, by next month you'll have learned more and wishing you did it differently. guaranteed.

edit: meant to quote the OP not the 2nd comment

Thanks for the replies peeps. I'm definitely taking it slow, and looking and learning what I need/want. I've got a lot of learning to do, so I'm in no rush. I just need a good base on where I should start. I've been searching the forums and haven't found a starters guide to this yet. Also my funding is low atm so I can't go balls deep.

Read this forum, read tips/mods/tricks sticky at the top of 3rd gen. Under "Tacoma Garage" scroll down to builds and read 3rd gen builds to get an idea. Maybe even read some 2nd gen builds for fun.

Welcome to TW. I was in a very similar spot 2 yrs ago when I bought my truck. The first things I would recommend would be sliders and skids and to protect while you learn what you need to be happy with the capability of your truck. Then focus on tires/wheels lift, and bumpers. If you start wheeling too hard for you and your trucks abilities with sliders and skids you may need bumpers sooner than later. It seems I learn about a new upgrade I want everytime I go out.

I'd suggest taking the cheap route: get out and use what you have, without any mods just yet. Learn the capabilities of the truck as it is. You will gain experience and learn more about what you want/need, plus you'll get to see other rigs and compare them to yours.

Then you can mod with wisdom.

You're hooked, but did you reach the limit of you or the truck? If not keep playing until you find a limit, then mod.

If you try to prep for everything, you are going to be many thousands in the hole and some dood in a stock Taco and AT tires might still hang with you the whole way?

    Just my hot take.
