Hey everybody, just joined the site. In short, my story is, no Tacoma yet, but I'm in the market. Always drove trucks until gas prices shot up a few years ago, been in a four-door sedan since, now I'm ready to come back to a pickup.

Been looking around for awhile, and I've decided the Tacoma is the truck for me. I did have a couple questions though.

Mainly, what is the reliability like in these trucks? Most of the ones I've found in my price range are relatively high mileage. How high is "too high" when it comes to mileage on these guys?

I've kinda zeroed in on this one: http://www.cars.com/go/search/detail.jsp?listingId=136932751&tracktype=usedcc

Thoughts? I'm looking for a PreRunner, four-door. Thanks guys for your help.

The Tacoma is a dang reliable truck look at all the first gens still going on here. Also if you plan on going off road ever get a 4x4 they get about the same as a prerunner does.

If a stick shift is what you're eyeing, make sure it shifts smoothly and the clutch doesn't slip. It's more about the way the truck was treated previously than mileage on the odometer. Like any other vehicle, look for a rusty frame, door/ fender gaps and unusual tire wear.

Welcome to TW Jon! Good choice on the Tacoma. This is the second one that I have owned and as far as reliability goes, there is none that comes close to Toyota when it comes to trucks. I hope that you find one that you like, Aloha! :)

Wow, thanks guys for the great responses. Sounds like I've made a good choice with the Tacoma. So, assuming everything checks out mechanically, 164,xxx miles on an '05 doesn't seem outrageously high?

I'd buy a new one. they aren't too terribly outrageously priced and hold their value well. It's true a basic one costs more than a basic full size "domestic" truck, but you can't go wrong buying a new one.

for me, i went from a chevy 2500hd diesel, 4x4, long bed, crew cab, with big tires and bumpers that could take an elk out. now I'm in a 2014 tacoma, 4x2, dc, 4cyl and I LOVE IT! ditched that truck because i commute 70 each way and the mpg's were killing me. best move I've ever made in the truck dept :)) get used or new and you won't regret it imo

Not in my opinion. I think that if everything checks out mechanically and you keep up with maintenance while treating her nice and you will have many more years of faithful service from a Toyota truck, Aloha!:)
