    Shenanigans grill update.

The pressure washer did some WONDERS to clean up the plastics, etc. Thing was uncovered and under trees for a while, I think, so it needed a good blast with the pressure washer. SOME of the high temp paint started to chip, I can fix that.... BUT.....

    The parts list for repairs:
    1. Grates, these are cooked (enameled peeling, no dice)
    2. Flavorizer bars (CRUSTY, one was crumbly, the others were spent, with holes, etc
    3. Bottom catch pan is toast. Couple holes, some rust.
    4. (I'm going to ignore) The upper rack was rusted beyond repair, so that was just removed.

The gas burners work, and everything else is in good shape.

So the debate is.... Do I spend 135 on a chipping (throw in 10 bucks for a can of black grill paint, no big deal there), small grill with plastic side tables, that is just a "holdover" grill until I actually decide what I want (on a grill I got for free).

    upload_2025-3-17_10-10-23.png

Or just grab a cheapo for the same price that doesn't have any damage and doesn't need any repairs.

    upload_2025-3-17_10-22-2.png

Just have to decide if the repairs are worth it on the nicer grill (in theory) or to go for the cheap option.

    :boom:

Anyone have any inputs, I am all ears. I'm 50/50, would be nice to have a nice, kick ass Weber. But also, it's been neglected and might not be worth the bare minimum repairs vs starting from fresh.

Here's another picture to help. Gotta wire brush the inside of this part too

    upload_2025-3-17_11-1-52.jpg

Part of me is thinking throw 150ish at a 500$ ish grill, and it will treat me well for another many years. The parts that are still in good shape is what makes Weber stand out and be more expensive up front.

Other parts of me thinking that a fresh canvas treated well could last me just as long, even if it is kinda (definitely) on the cheap construction side.

Clean it up with new parts sell it for a profit but cheaper than a new weber.

Is $100 savings worth the inevitable upkeep and quirks from the previous owner?

Meh, not really interested in flipping it. I want a grill, so the effort would be for me.
They're pretty cheap, I found a "well maintained, replaced burners recently" of this exact grill for 50$ on Facebook Marketplace.
But 150$ish and this will last twice as long as a 250-300$ grill, that's where I'm at.
I'm kinda stuck on a gas grill since I have a pellet pooper smoker already, and the convenience of a gas grill is a big turn on :p

I don't know - that's the thing, I'm getting rid of all the problem parts and putting in new ones. The quality build of the old parts is leaps and bounds better than a cheap build from Home Cheapo.

I think I'll poke around and check them out next time I am there in person and see what they feel like. If they're flimsy tin cans with cheapo builds, I'll skip it. A new Weber is 600+, so it's not 1:1 - I am spending 150$, vs a 200$ grill, BUT the repaired grill is a lot better quality. In theory.

I think the prior owner (my next door neighbor) didn't cover it, and it was under a tree, so it just needed some cleaning. The pressure washer did a lot of good. There's no moving parts, and it's a simple gas grill. Upkeep and quirks are pretty limited. It's like getting a used hammer vs a used car. It's a hammer...

:spy: What, do you own a porsche or something?

Added wrinkle - we might be bulldozing (potentially literally, using a bulldozer) the back yard and going bananaland on something bigger.

Maybe not to THIS extent...but also, maybe.

    upload_2025-3-17_12-50-23.png

So this is a "I want a grill this year" in the meantime :p

    Me? NO never :)

I'm an engineer, I overthink the littlest things (like a grill) and spend almost no thought on the bigger things (like vehicles, houses...)

 I guess I don't have much saved, can I interest you in Sourdough and Burnt Ends from last year's super bowl? (KCMO burnt ends, San Francisco sourdough)

Please check inside the cabinet for any rust issues. I would look on FB marketplace for a Weber Spirit 2. I picked one up for $200 almost new. I’m definitely in favor of rebuilding Weber grills as the fireboxes last forever. 2cents
