Get the truck to dealer before there is damage done to engine

Good luck getting it diagnosed, hopefully nothing too serious. It’s hard not be worried about something that is such a big investment.

If the heater was on, the AC was probably on.

It’s not coming from the a/c. It’s coming from the intake manifold or valve cover to the best of my ears. It’s isolated in that are of the engine.

Just got back from the dealership and they claimed the “grinding” noise from the engine was considered normal, sent the video to the engineering department. As for the rough idle the engineer told the dealer that knock value is little high and the fuel trim is a little low. Was told it could be too much ethanol or additives in the fuel and advised me to run high test fuel . The thing is, I’ve been running 93 octane fuel from Exxon or shell. So I’m assuming if I was running 87 then these numbers that are out of spec would be even more out of spec. They scheduled an appointment with a field tech in couple weeks. Knock value was at 26.7

While you wait for your next appointment.

I would disconnect the negative battery cable and let it "reset" overnight. Then go burn a tank of gas and refill it with a lower grade gas. See if anything changes.

Might be a bit late to the thread but I've been experiencing a similar grinding/rattling/rubbing noise that seems to emit from somewhere on the front driver's side of the truck. I have a '21 TRD OR 4x4 with multiple modification installed. I'm going on over a year of troubleshooting the issue and even had the vehicle taken to a Toyota dealership and paid for the "30k mile complete maintenance/service" package that they offer and also added the 4x4 maintenance service package including inspecting the differentials, etc. The Toyota technicians said that there were not any issues observed across any of their maintenance/service/inspections. I've also cleaned the MAF sensor as well as cleaning out the entire throttle body. The issue has yet to be resolved. There seems to be no effect on the RPMs when the noise occurs. The noise appears during idle after the truck has warmed up after start and the noise also appears around 900RPM or 1100RPM in low gear only--typically in 2nd gear. I've also noticed the noise to occur more consistently at idle when the truck is on level ground or a downhill grade, but seems to be less consistent when idle on an uphill grade. If the noise occurs at idle but continues to idle, the noise seems to consistently disappear after idling for a short time. Activating the heating/AC can cause the noise to appear, but only within the aforementioned RPM ranges. My truck is supercharged, so I typically run at least 91 octane but typically can only find 93 octane out here where I am at on the US east coast (the pumps seem to not offer 91 octane out here). I only fuel up at gas stations with top-tier gas or whatever it's referred to as. I've also put a can of octane booster through a tank of 93 octane to rule out the fact that the octane level could be causing the issue. I'm currently trying to narrow the issue down to possibly being caused by butane content in winter-blend fuel. Other things I have not yet looked into is replacing the fuel filter, having the spark plugs inspected. The truck has also not thrown any visible codes, nor has a check engine light ever illuminated due to the issue. Having the OTT tune applied did not affect the issue as well (I assumed it would not, but wondered if having more power on the low-end would eliminate the opportunities for the noise to occur.) I'm also beginning to wonder if the issue just occurs as part of exhaust resonance. I have an aftermarket catback exhaust and I'd read another forum post about the noise and vibrations caused by exhaust resonance on some Tacomas. The issue does not seem to affect performance in any way, and I am not mechanically inclined but am a very analytical person and I wanted to contribute my analysis so far for the rest of the TacomaWorld users that might see this.
