I was just curious if anyone had tried talking to one of the camper shell companies and tried to set up a group buy through them? Ive got three guys wanting to buy one and figured if it was pointless to try and set one up, people on here would probably know better than I.

Wow. An ambitious thought. I've never come across one since I've been a member here. Subbed.

Me either haha which is why I wanted to test interest before going through the hassle of dealing with the manufacturer.

It probably would be difficult..very difficult.

Since shipping these are out of the quesion.

I recommend posting this in your regional or state thread to grab some local guys that can make that drive to pick up the shell

Start phoning around, this has the potential to be huge. I'm willing to bet you could get 20 to 30 buyers pretty easily.

The shipping thing is a concern, but Manufactures have to ship to Regional distributors already so it's not too farfetched.. It would depend what brand and style(s) of shells you were going for.

    Now here's an idea.

Let's say you find a manufacturer.

He has various distribution hubs all around the country.

Could group buy participants across the country pick up their shell at the hub nearest them?

If so, then you can have a huge list of participants if they're willing to make drive to a distributor hub.

I currently going through a fiasco trying to get snugtop to right their wrongs.. they have no customer service it would seem. Not saying bad customer service, I'm saying that it does not exist. As in, no one responds to you. Sort of mind blowing.. Don't expect to hear back from them anytime soon:rolleyes:

I think one major prob is that people will want different brands and models, so getting enough people to select one brand would be a major hurdle, then whether that brand is willing to work a deal. The dealers (distributiors) will still need their markup and labor costs for install for the services they provide, so it would have to be an agreement with the mfg to make a base cost cut across any of their models (say like 10% off any Leer) that the dealer does not take a hit for. Make sense?

I agree, but if there is enough interest id hope the mfg would do what it took on their end to get us a discount and still have the dealers get their cut too. but we shall see. I know we're talking to a dealer here in Charleston about just cutting a deal if we buy three through them. since we were trying that, I figured I would include you fellas in on the fun. I know how much everyone on this site loves a good buying party!

I will get a Leer within the next 6 months. If a group buy comes along, I will absolutely take part in it.

Alright so ive been talking back and forth with a couple of leer and ARE dealers since neither manufacturer want to do anything and the dealers also can do anything short of waiving the installation fee. soooo long story short, unless you've got a buddy that's a dealer and wants to play ball there wont be any group buys on truck caps. Sorry for getting yalls hopes up! im still planning on getting one regardless though.
