Bored and stroked 3120xp in the foreground. 136cc. Race GAS. The other is stock bore and stroke at 119cc. Methanol burner. For those of you who live near Arnold, CA stop on by this Saturday for a great day of Hot Saws and timber sports.92D040EE-029F-409A-A143-6B8E550FEC9A.jpg

    I have lots of questions.

    1. How much power are those saws making?
    2. Is this considered a large saw for hot sawing (not sure that’s the right term)?
    3. What chain speeds are you running on those?
    4. What pitch chains are common in this sport?
    5. What are some good resources to learn more about this sport and the common requirements for the chainsaws?

I have more but I’ll stop there for now.

You should try this for Halloween. It was by far the most popular thing we ever propped.

I’d check locally to see if you have any events. Here in California, they tend to call them Jubilees.

Power varies, but if I had to guess, they should be pumping about 10-20hp, depending on cc’s and fuel 40-45%. Nitromethane would be the max. Otherwise, it’s race fuel and Methanol.

Yes, the largest production saws. Mac 101B-123cc, Stihl 084-121(?), Husky 3120-119. Although, high custom work can yield a sleeper 154-160cc Husky, using a Stihl 090 top end. But bike saws are the largest.

Chain speeds I’m not sure if, but rpm’s are between 15,000-18,000 WOT. 13,000-15,000 under load.

    Pitch, .375 or .404

For resources, FB has some great info. I’m in a group called Modified Chainsaws. World record holders and the like are members. That would be a start for you

That’s a class in another dimension for sure. But that’s a great example of chain speed and extraction of the wood chips. Take a look at the stream of chips coming off the chain. It looks like a fire hydrant was let lose.

That oil filter exposed makes me cringe every loop...you'd think for how custom that job was they could throw a cage around it.

I just recently finished building a 154cc Husqvarna/Stihl combo for Hot Saw competitions that will be buzzing 5%-10% Nitromethane. Using a 3120xp chassis with a Stihl 090 cylinder, 66mm Wiseco piston, and 3mm stroker crank.

Initial start-up passed with no problems using Methanol. Biggest worry was the big piston clearing the case at BDC. There was very little room for error. Looking forward to the piston ring sitting and unleashing its true potential.

    Take your pick.

    136cc GAS, 119cc Methanol, 154cc Nitromethane.

I feel so insignificant with my 18” bar stock Echo.

Bit seriously, those are amazing saws you have Rick, way cool.

Thank you Gearheadesw, they’re fun to build, and exciting to buzz in competition. Most notably against Mr. George Harrison Sr. From Grass Valley, CA! I have a lot of respect for that hombre. Here he is back in his younger days.

Would make a great poster in someone’s garage :0)

I believe that’s either a MAC KART 101B, or Bender aka West Bend.
