Supervisor Asks Woman To Take Down American Flag

For one Arlington woman, the answer was "no" after she hung an American flag in her office just before the Memorial Day weekend.

Debbie McLucas is one of four hospital supervisors at Kindred Hospital in Mansfield. Last week, she hung a three-by-five foot American flag in the office she shares with the other supervisors.

When McLucas came to work Friday, her boss told her another supervisor had found her flag offensive. "I was just totally speechless. I was like, 'You're kidding me,'" McLucas said.

McLucas' husband and sons are former military men. Her daughter is currently serving in Iraq as a combat medic.

Stifling a cry, McLucas said, "I just wonder if all those young men and women over there are really doing this for nothing."

McLucas said the supervisor who complained has been in the United States for 14 years and is formerly from Africa. McLucas said the supervisor took down Debbie's flag herself.

"The flag and the pole had been placed on the floor," McLucas said. But McLucas also said hospital higher ups had told her some patients' families and visitors had also complained.

"I was told it wouldn't matter if it was only one person," she said. "It would have to come down."

McLucas said hospital bosses told her as far as patriotism was concerned, the flag flying outside the hospital building would have to suffice.

Kindred Hospital Corporate Headquarters are located in Kentucky. They have yet to make a final decision on the matter. They have not returned our phone calls for comment.

The Kindred Hospital Corporation was chosen as Fortune's most admired for 2009. McLucas hopes they'll back her patriotism.

"I find it very frightening because if I can't display my flag, what other freedoms will I lose before all is said and done," McLucas asked.

Oh yea, this is from their website:

"Our main switchboard number is (817)473-6101. Please call our main switchboard number for admission and employment information. We are happy to answer any questions you may have."

And yes, I did have a question but they wasn't happy to answer it.

    ___________________________________________________________________

UPDATE as of 20090527 at 1518 hrs.

I guess they got enough phone calls and emails because this is the update to story.

"...late Wednesday morning, Kindred posted on its website a statement about the incident. It reads, in part: "The disagreement was over the size of the flag and not what it symbolized. We have invited the employee to put the flag back up."

We're contacting McLucas for her take on what Kindred said. We'll have that part of the story later today on CBS11TV.com."

Seems a little OCD. 3 flags? Does she have Stars and stripes undies on too?
Seriously though, who would find the flag offensive after moving to that country? Don't like it? Move back to where ever the fuck you fled from cause they're obviously much better there if you came to America.

Pretty sure it was just one flag that measured 3x5. Not three flags.

The only other flag mentioned was the one on the flag pole in front of the building.

But even if she did have three flags how can anyone who lives here find the American Flag "offensive". Hell, that offends me.

Yea, thats something I never understood. People come here because it is obviously a better country than the one they left, however they act like their home country is the shit and talk bad about the USA. You can be proud of your heritage but alot of people take it too far

As I am the son of a three war vet and a proud American, anybody who finds my flag offensive is going to find me a lot more offensive. I can guaran-damn-tee you that!

I simply can't respond to this further without using a lot of offensive words.

Post away Caddmannq, sometimes it feels good to vent. This thread is very disturbing.

Hey, I'm Canadian and that offends me!

If she was wandering around wearing the damn thing, maybe there are grounds for complaint, but in her office prior to memorial day? Come on people! Political correctness goes way too far some times...

Calling the flag of the Land of Opportunity offensive when you live in it is a bit hypocritical, isn't it? BTW, this really made me mad and wonder what kind of a thought process these people complaining have. :crapstorm: I think a crapstorm is in order for those disgraced people.

Wow, thats just not cool at all.

What kind of world are we living in today?

I'm pretty sure (but not 100%) that 20 years ago nobody was offended when they hung American flags in the US.
