When I moved from OK to FL, I thought I was going to "out smart" the system. I traded in and left the state on a dealer tag. When I went to tag it in FL I had to pay sales tax based on the sales price listed on the note. It was 6 or 7% Sales tax back then, +240 initial tag (impact) fee, +registration of $40-ish, +some other crap for a few bucks. :annoyed:

Wound up almost $2K light and walking funny as I left the DMV that day. Clearly the system had outsmarted me. :(

MA is $50 for 2 years. Of course excise tax hits us good. Inspection stickers just went up from $29 to $35.

WOW. I think you'll have to pee in a bucket at that rate of usage.

A year or 2 ago I saw something on I think NatGeo about the water issues in California, something like 95 percent of the water is used by 2 percent of the population? And some wine company was really sucking it up. Poke around on Google and check it out, really amazing stuff

I’d go there. We get our renewals about two months before they are due.

If you think thats bad, did you know its illegal(in some cases highly regulated) to capture rainfall on your own property in several western states?

GA used to do the ad valorum - which was brutal - they switched to a regular $20 fee a couple of years ago - SO much better!

All this reminds me when I purchased a 1993 F150 for $500 awhile back. It didn't run and was going to be a project truck. Went down to the local tax office to get the title switched over and paid $400 in sales taxes on the truck. When I inquired as to why the taxes were 80% of the purchase price, I was told "we base it off the appraised value of the truck." Which meant they "appraised" a broken down 20 year old truck at roughly $8,000... The Blue Book at that time was roughly $1200 assuming it ran. How they got $8,000? No one could tell me and I was eventually told to pay it or leave the office.

Every time I go visit the Boulder / Denver area and hear the laments that it is starting to feel like California makes me laugh for this exact reason.

I'm just hoping the influx of transplants (me included) doesn't mess up SLC too badly. Although hopefully we can chip away at some of the absurd alcohol laws.

My first tags bought in California was in 1973 when Reagan was governor. They were high so I you should blame him or an earlier governor. Go outside and enjoy. There is only one California.

That’s another point we’ll made, because if they vote to “split California” into 3 states, the lower portion of California has no means to a direct water source as it comes from the north via ice packs and aqua ducts and the “northern California states” will have the “lower California states” by the balls. Doubt it will pass, but this is getting dumber and dumber each year...

I took a class about 20 years ago, we spent about half the semester talking about the potential water issues that Cali and the rest of the west would be dealing with, and was in Northern Maine, about as far as you can get from Cali while in the US.

This is our water threat in Maine.

    God must really love
you because of that simple fact. I know I’ve done bad things in my childhood years and simply living..err I mean “surviving” in California is my punishment. Some say I could move, but everything I know is here...I just can’t get myself to do it but if I were I would consider one of the 7 states without income and/or sales tax..they seem to still be able to manage their budgets just fine. California should take notes that it’s still possible to not have taxes and not have debt. Boggles me how much taxation we have and still can’t manage our debt. That’s why we’re over crowded with a population moving here under the poverty line, and we’re spending a lot just trying to keep them living like the middle class. I’m probably sponsoring a few families and don’t even know it.

You nailed my situation. Exactly where I had purchased my first and current taco. Then paid the taxes in Los Angeles. However, they taxed me on whatever number I wrote on the DMV form, and they never asked for proof...kicking myself in the ass for missing this CA DMV best kept secret...

The definition of insanity is to do the same thing day in and day out and expect a different outcome. If I moved out of CA, anyone can. Like Nike says Just do it!
