Gumout liquid tune up, and other confusing products

I have a 1996 with the 2.4. Starting to idle rough despite new plugs and dist cap & wires. Dirty injectors I'm sure. Heard the white can of Gumout liquid tune up is good, but the autostore has 5 different kind of Gumout injector cleaners and other brands. What is a good injector cleaner?

Small atomizer spray bottle filled with water , this will remove built up carbon in the intake , cyl head and piston


With intake tube off exposing the TB and engine idling at 1500rpm spray water into the TB

 

Don’t over think it. Buy a major brand on sale. Pay attention to ounces of product to a full tank (# of gals) of gas.

B-12 Chemtool is a good cleaner. That's what I use when I can but if not then just some Chevron Techron cleaner will do. It's best to start using the stuff early on and not wait until carbon buildup gets bad enough to cause issues.

 

If it's already hesitating, I'm not sure those snake oil bottles are going to work miracles on your engine.

I mean, give it a shot, but I wouldn't be surprised if you end up having to take the injectors out and actually clean them.

 

Which isn't all that hard on a 4cyl. Plenty of YouTube videos for a good DIY clean.

Save your money on the bottles, look up a 3rd party garage/shop that does a fuel injector clean with BG products, takes about an hour, under pressure, no cleanup, about $125

Speaking of OCD, the nerds on bobistheoilguy.com would suggest that anything with Polyetheramine or PEA is what you want. Redline, Gumout All-in-one and Techron are all good choices for their high PEA concentrations (I'm sure there are plenty of others). No guarantee that any of these will make a difference.

If you regularly fill up with Top Tier gas, then those additives are already present, so pouring a bottle of something into your tank is unlikely to help. Also, FWIW, I have never encountered convincing evidence that running Seafoam through the intake objectively improves anything; just makes a smoke show.

 

Careful with any of these treatments on an older vehicle. I've had Seafoam free up a bunch of crud that had settled in the tank and send it through to the fuel filter.

Turned a poor running truck into a non-running truck.

 

I use B-12 ever since Seafoam started going way up in price, at least around here. From what I can tell it's the same stuff, for 1/2 the cost. I usually put a can in the tank if I'm doing a long road trip in the truck, which is maybe a couple times a year.

 

Use to run Seafoam through the TB, but the more I read about it the more it sounds like I'm probably doing more harm to the sensors and wreaking potential havoc than doing any good. Just put B12 in the gas tank now once or twice a year.

 

I mean to be honest low mileage vehicles shouldn't have issue to begin with, so they are not needed as much. BUT, running a can through every now and then can help from carbon build-up down the road. It will not prevent it but minimize versus no treatment.

changing the fuel filter regularly as well will help keep the sediment that's in all fuel from reaching the injectors.

also sustained running is far better than short trips, the longer you can keep the engine pumping at operating ranges the better burn-off and less build-up

I run a can through when I remember to but definitely not every fillup or oil change

 

I use B12 Chemtool sporadically in all my vehicles. Works great and cheap. Every so often I'll run Seafoam through the brake booster vacuum line.
