I don’t carry normally. Only under certain circumstances like picking something up at night from Craigslist or traveling far and late at night across state lines (with reciprocity of course). I guess I can forego the safe for those rare instances.

Cheapo stand alone gun box with a cable lock under the seat does a good job for when you can't keep on your person. Very little of what will fit in the cabin is strong enough to not get pried open with time. Much of what is used can be pried quickly with a flat ehad screw driver. Even though the lock box with cable is no thicker, the fact it is not bolted to anything reduces the leverage able to be applied. Make it slightly longer to break into.

Its nice to know when you will need a gun and only carry at those times. I choose to have something to defend myself at all times because I am not a psychic.

Well, if I am putting myself in a situation that is inherently more dangerous, then yes. I don’t carry everyday for other reasons which make it impractical. I am on federal property, an elementary school, and crossing into a state that doesn’t honor my CC permit 5 days a week.

If I didn’t have those aforementioned considerations, I would carry everyday.

Thanks for all the posts, links, and ideas. I’m shopping for a Tacoma and plan to install one of these products for my firearms.

I have the Tuffy console insert and a holster bar from highwayholster.com. I would buy both again if I were outfitting a truck. I generally carry IWB or in a backpack, but if I can't carry with me, I will lock it in the console. I don't think it is secure enough there to store it there overnight, but it will keep kids breaking windows for stuff to pawn in store parking lots out. When I am driving, if it is not in my IWB holster, it is in a kydex holster on the highwayholster bar. It is very convenient to use there, more secure than just a magnet, but no drilling required.

Need to vacuum my truck but you get the idea. $24 SnapSafe combo for when I can't take my G19 with me, to prevent smash and grabs. Obviously I don't leave it in there overnight or anything but it's a good system for me.

My only issue with the lockbox under the rear seat (which I used for a while) is that you have to get out and open the back door to put your gun in it. If there is anybody watching the parking lot for potential vehicles to target for theft, you are telegraphing to them that you have something potentially of value that you are hiding under your seat.

So if you are carrying a rifle to put in your double cab tacoma where else besides the back seat would you put it. Now putting it on the seat for all to see when you park or in a hidden compartment out of sight.

No matter what if they are watching you when you put the rifle in your truck it does not matter where it is they know its there. If they walk by your truck while parked and did not see you put the gun in the truck all they see is a empty back seat and move on if its in a underseat storage.

Sorry, I misspoke, but was replying to the post above mine showing a separately lockbox for a handgun cable locked and under the FRONT seat, not the rear seat as I said above. I didn't quote the post because I didn't want to repeat the pictures and was too lazy to delete from the quote. You are correct that there are really few options for storing a long gun, and in my opinion, none of them are truly secure from a well-prepared thief. The same can be said for storing handguns...even the good console boxes can be pretty easily defeated by a crook with the right tools who knows there is something good in the box. That is why I prefer not to advertise that I have something valuable locked away if I can avoid it.
