I would like to own a hand gun. I realize living in Los Angeles, it isn't that easy.

I would like to learn what is the best way for a female to get started. I am 5'6" and 117lbs. I have done some shooting at ranges over the years, but am not familiar enough with them.

I am surrounded by Green Party/Democratic hippies.

Thus I have to turn to my Tacoma friends for help.

    1) What type of guns should I consider for purchase?

    2) What is the amount of range time/pratice time I need or is recommended for a beginner?

    3) How much should this hobby I should be investing $$?

    Thanks

1 go to a store and handle as many firearms as you can, try renting some if possible and shooting as many as you can and pick the one most comfortable for you

2 How much range time is up to you, I spend at least a couple hours a month shooting

3 Don't buy into a bunch of add ons for whatever pistol you pick. Spend lots on ammo, range time, and if necessary instructor time

Thank you. I didn't realize I can get instructor time. I will look into that. Much appreciated.

Don't let the people at the gun store sell you a gun. Like @JimBeam said handle every one they have til you find what fits you. Some places rent firearms to try at their range. I highly recommend this before making a purchase.

The right pistol for you, is not always the right pistol for anyone else

So can I go to a gunstore, ask for the one that fits for me, and take that into their range, essentially "trying out" before buying?

Some stores you can. Look for the stores that have their own range on site.

    Depends on the range

You may have to visit several to find one that rents

I would like it 99% due to home security. I am not sure I would be comfortable carrying it with me.

I'm a Glock and FN guy, but I recognize they don't fit everyones hands right

Try pretty much every gun you can get your hands on

Without any plans to carry, stick to longer slides and "bigger" guns

They're typically easier to shoot if they fit your hands and have better accuracy due to the distance between the sights

Ok change that to glock 17 or 19 depending on whichever one is more comfortable

And the fn pistols are nice too.

But just handle them all, try some out of you can.

Look into the Oak Tree Gun Club up in Valencia, I got my firearms/handling certification there. Took a safety course and then took the written test afterward, they do it all there.

Most gun ranges have rental guns. No store will let you "test" a new gun. At best, they might let you shoot a used one, but probably not. Purchase from a firearms store or range, not a place like Bass Pro shop or gander mountain, they are idiots. A revolver will be the best for a beginner for home defense.

    glock 19 is perfect.

get instruction. look around for day courses. there will be NRA basic pistol instructors around that will do a nice job.
