Hey TW, so I may be coming to California for the next six years (San Diego) and I've apparently got some evil weapons that are specifically banned by name. I learned about the California "Military Assault Weapons Permit". In the permit it requires...

1.) A copy of the military members identification card

I don't really know what to do with this one, because you aren't allowed to make copies of your CAC.

2.) Requires a signature from your base commander stating there is a bona fide reason for you to possess personally owned "assault weapons" for official duties.

Unless you are operator as fuck and you have to use a codename with your family, you don't use your own AR-15 at work.

What I'm trying to figure out is does anyone actually possess such a permit? How did you get your command to sign off on that? I'm thinking I might be able to say that private firearm training is my reason to the command as the USCG allows for so little range time. I am qualified/certified in the CG to carry weapons and my job does require it.

    Thanks for any input!

*Lets not make this political please*

I am stationed at Fort Irwin(Army) and we are told to ship them out of the state to a friend or a family member "for safe keeping." I personally would not try it if you're staying in Cali after you're done.

That's the same thing I was told coming to Puerto Rico. I personally think that is a pretty weak cop out by our commands.

I don't really have a place I can safely store my weapons. I mean yeah I have friends and family but I don't want to put that on them to keep thousands of dollars worth of weapons.

This is gonna sound wacky as fuck, but I may draft a letter tomorrow and have it endorsed by my command to the office of the Governor for California looking for guidance. As the law is written, it bars like 99.99% of military members to possess their weapons.

Haha while I would love to distribute a portion of my arsenal around the country to all of you to enjoy, change of plans, I'm more than likely going to Virginia now. But of course being the military that'll probably change in the next five minutes.

Thanks! That's what originally caught my eye when I bought it. Its a C39 and came with the black laminate.

This is my biggest rifle, .308 Bushmaster.

God damn it all this gun talk has got me wanting another rifle...

Yes. Anywhere you go. If you live on a military installation you usually have to store personal weapons in the armory, also you have to have paperwork from your CO acknowledging receipt and existence of a personally owned weapon on base. But again I'm only familiar with the chair force so perhaps the Army, Marines, and Navy are different but I can't imagine they'd be looser than what the Air Force has.

But again state rules will usually trump the installation regulations...

Thanks for the insight. I expect to have this problem in the future. It would be cool if you could at least store the "bad" guns in the armory even if you live off base, but it sounds like state laws would still get in the way.

It really has been a hassle owning firearms in the military which is crazy to me. I'm currently stationed in Puerto Rico where it takes up to a year to get a permit to carry. Even after you get the permit you are restricted to a certain number of rounds per year. I never bothered because my tour here is only two years.

The only thing you can fall back on is LEOSA (google it) but that is even a crap shoot because the DOD (or DHS in my case) doesn't give you a special ID if you are a Law Enforcement officer unless you are like a base cop. MP's will have to chime in because I don't know if they get a special ID.

Must be a pretty big safe haha.
