Just heard a gunshot not a block from my house. Sounded small caliber rifle. Sheriff is out looking now.

There's been a lot of armed break-ins and a rape in this area lately. And the sheriff's helo is always over this area with the big floodlight on.

I just loaded up my Mossberg.

Sure does. What sux worst is I'm out in "the shores". It's centered around a main road heading out of town that's probably 20 miles long. Long long ago all of it was an excellent area to live. When the housing market tanked a lot of people moved and rented their houses out to anyone with cash, no questions about how they got that cash. It started going bad on the east end and has been working its way west. Closer to town (west) is where the higher priced newer homes are, so the "undesirable" elements couldn't live there. Now the ones from the east end, having figured out there's nothing worth breaking in for where they live, are invading the west end...where I live.

Mostly stock for now, I have added a cb radio, various cheap mods and I plan on adding aftermarket wheels and other items in the future.
That sucks! Sorry to hear about all of the crime in your area. Is there a small gang of some sorts in that area now, or gang type activity, graffiti, drug sales, etc? Or maybe it's related to the bad economy.

Ever thought of getting a Police Scanner? I have one that I picked up from Radio Shack, works good. Every time I hear the chopper over head or hear a lot of Police around my area I turn that puppy on. Let's me know what's going on.

Friggin cops out here went digital. No more listening to what's going on. Either there were too many rubber-neckers showing up at crime scenes, or too many ambulance chasing lawyers keeping tow trucks from getting to accidents.

notavirg does VA have the "castle domain" law? Here in Fla we don't need to try and hide in a corner if someone enters our house (castle or domain) without permission, the law presumes they are not in there to sell you tupperware and you can make them dead, no questions asked.

Here is California, we have to first call the ACLU, then call the intruders lawyer up, and finally wait for confirmation from Sacramento.
And after all of that, if you're still alive and he is still in your house, you can open fire, but you can only shoot him in the leg. That way he can sue you for "threatening" his life.
    lol

If you pull your weapon and they are still in the house but trying to run, and you get them in the back, turn them over and get them one more time in the front.

That way you can say "I got them in the front, once they fell I put one more in them cause it looked to me like they were reaching for a weapon".

Yeah, gun takers and bleeding hearts out there, it sounds bad. But I got NO mercy, pity nor quarter for someone in my house in the middle of the night that don't belong there.

Isn't there a requirement you have to hit them with your wife's purse first?

In Virginia, if they are in your house you can take them out.....

...but if they make it out your front door, you better drag them back in...

Yeah, it really sucks. But first before you throw it you have to empty everything out of the purse, including tampons (Those things can take an eye out), and then throw it.
And then pray he doesn't get a scratch, or It's your ass.

I don't know the specifics of the state laws on this, but I have heard of stores of people going to jail for shooting someone in their house that had broke in. And various stories like that.
You can have your gun anywhere in your house, and out of a safe loaded, but not recommend or anything by me.
I have tried to look up laws on this from the state, but couldn't find much on anything.
But I know he has to be in your house and I think you can't shoot them if they are anywhere on the property(except inside house), but not sure on that.
I heard that they have to be more than three steps into your house, not sure on that though too, could be made up and I couldn't find anything on that.
And I also heard that you have to "fell that your life is threatened". Duh!? the guy broke into my house. And I would assume that you would have to prove this.
But that could be untrue too as well, couldn't find anything on that too.

If I had a choice I would go to Texas; not so many restrictive laws for personal protection and defense.

we're in the process of switching for security purposes...we've had several incidents recently involving the criminals having scanners...makes for a very unsafe situation for us
