Are they still sticking with the 2004 design or do they have a new truck in the works?

Looks like they are sticking with their current body style which is a facelifted 04+ look. It's not sleek and modern, but its a solid truck.

Interesting. It does seem like they have really gone budget focused between the Vault line of cases and now this. I get we don't all need tier-1 grade storage solutions, but that review surprised me.

What I gathered from his posts is that it's a nice solution, just over priced for what it is and potentially how durable it is. I'll be curious to see more long term reviews.

Yeah, Pelican does have a brand premium to it, so I get the value/cost conundrum. Their original line of cases are bomber and worth the price to me to protect some of my valuable pews, but there's a reason I haven't blown that sorta money to mount one up on my roof when a $69 Plano is doing quite well.

Yeah no doubt, their normal stuff is pure beef and well worth the price. I guess it makes sense they went less durable because those cases are heavy. You don't want to be lifting them up onto your roof and hanging off your bed rails. I guess as long as they hold up over time and don't leak, that'll be a win.

My Pelican case experiences are as follows: I had one of their briefcase laptop cases in Iraq. I watched it fall out of the cargo hold of an international jetliner. It was strapped down to my ruck sack and had come loose. I was a little ways away, but watching if falling, I knew what it was. Brand new laptop if I remember right. It hit the tarmac, bounced once and landed hard. I thought for sure I was screwed. The case has some good gouges out of it where it hit, but it stayed closed and the laptop was perfectly fine.

Other experience was with a digital camera I kept with me in Iraq. I had one of Pelican's small electronics cases for it. It was attached to my IBA through a lot of dust, and other garbage. The camera was fine up until the day it detached from my IBA and made a home somewhere in Iraq. Hell, someone probably found it and it still using it.

Other experiences were that I worked at a job where we used the huge roller Pelicans for a hardware/software system I was supporting. These cases went back and forth to combat zones many times and we never had an issue.

So yeah. I purchased this cargo case making the assumption I would own a case that was similar to the above. I unpacked it and was super surprised that I could see light through the sides of it. I did not expect it. The lid is about the thickness of your run of the mill ice cooler. The bottom is somewhere between the sides and the lid. The lid only has small cables to keep it from opening too far. No locks, but there are provisions for a padlock on the three latches. There are also padlock provisions on the mounting bracket, but if I'm looking at them right, it wouldn't take much to defeat them.

The brackets themselves are pretty well made and powder-coated. Most of the hardware is grade 8. I do like that I can move the box from front to back on the utility tracks if I ever need to. I also like that it's specifically made for the Tacoma. It looks like Pelican also makes saddle-mount cases and rear corner-mount cases for the Tacoma. I would've preferred a saddle-mount, but it looks like they'll stick up above the bed lip. They also make roof rack mounts for the smaller cases, but I couldn't find any description of how they worked.

As another means of comparison, I previously had an aluminum tool box in the bed. I drilled holes in the back of it and attached it to the front track using a hi-lift mount that I modified to work.

Cost-wise the aluminum was the better way to go. Actually, it had more benefits. It was completely water/weather proof, had a lock, and was sturdy as hell.

So why the change? The aluminum box weighed a ton and didn't have handles on it. I put my own on, but never fully trusted them to support the weight of the box and contents. It was also a little bit of a pain to get out of the bed; weight aside.

The Pelican box is light-weight, has built-in handles and removes with two clevis pins. I can also put it on my roof rack if needed (it has multiple tie-down options).

The box and mount ran about $600. My previous solution? Maybe $600 as well?

Edit: Ask questions. I can take some photos if wanted. I like to help folks make informed purchasing decisions.

I think my biggest issues is the weight and cost of the cases I want a la 1510 or 17xx series. Like I said in a previous post, a $69 plano that has integrated keyed locks and I dont care about drilling a few holes in it works damn well.

Probably a good idea to stick with the Plano. For the price, they're not bad boxes.

Now that's smart. I would change one thing though. The loose tail of the strap should not run the way he has it. A lot of people don't realize that closing the ratchet portion locks the cam and keeps silly stuff from happening. He should have run it back through toward the front of the truck or maybe trimmed it down so it fit around the slats on the rack with a little slack and then ratcheted the small bit of left over into the cam.
