Normally keep my recovery gear in a DIY pullout drawer in the bed, but sometimes I need to travel lighter. Discovered a 60mm mortar can makes a perfect fit for snatch+tow strap, tree saver, soft and hard shackles, hitch and pin, and a set of gloves. Should fit perfectly with a jerry and water can across the front of the bed.

Spent the weekend down at the Cobalt Kinetics range in St. George shooting the Desert Brutality 2 gun action match with some college buddies. We try to do a match or instruction course a year as a means of staying close with each other as life drags us in various directions. Lots of physical challenges mixed with tricky shooting challenges. Came in 41st place out of 146 people overall, and did much better in my shooting category since we were competing with some heavy caliber guys in the overall that had some major advantages in some stages with spinners, etc. My 11.5 5.56 wasn't doing a damn thing against some of them . Had a few stumbles that could have gotten me into the low #20s without them, but life happens and lessons were learned. I don't think I'm ever gonna get all this dust out of everywhere though.

The sled drag stage involved dragging a ~150-200 pound sled between pistol and rifle bays. That last run from sled to the last pistol array was a major case of jelly legs. Lost a little time missing the sled drag on the way back, and movement between the last 2 pistol barrels cuz I got fuzzy on the written brief.

Another challenging stage was a pistol IPSC target at 67 yards. Get a hit and toss a 50lbs kettle bell over the barricade, move to other side, pick up your rifle and engage an A zone target (roughly 8inch square) standing offhand at 167 yards.

One of my favorite stages involved a 35 pound ballistic shield. Run down the sandy trench, turn left and engage a 100+ yard target with rifle. from 4 positions, then move to the target array and engage two 6 inch circles, then move to the last position and engage the circles weak side only.

Was there any break in between those courses? That kettle bell looked like a PITA.

 

Yeah, there were 7 people in our squad and we were one of the faster groups so we often were waiting on other squads to finish before we took over.

There were 4 stages each day for 2 days and a lot of waiting around. Our squad could have finished all 8 in one grueling day. They said they were planning on doing an "expedite" group next year that gets to do all 8 on hard mode in one day.

 

Engage pistol targets all the way up a steep sandy hill, then bound to the ridge and engage 6 rifle targets 100-300 yards away.
