In the easier to get to spots, it was. But half an hour down a rocky track, it was pretty thin

We each have had a bundle laying around for months, so we decided to use them up. Plus the bundles pack perfectly in a designated spot in the back of my truck. I save the good stuff like the wood from your yard for the fire pit out back.

Yeah, they're pretty useless around camp.

It's been about 113 in Vegas for weeks. I spent the weekend in the mountains past Wendover and it was still warm there.

So my tablet always glitches out with gaia maps and its really become an issue on trail so I uninstalled it to reinstall an updated version. Well apparently android 4.4 isnt supported in the newest version of gaia. So no mas tablet gaia maps for now

May end up with a new tablet thanks to this :frusty:

Other than the tablet issue, is Gaia the way to go? I was looking at that and onX Offroad.

Do you use a Garmin sat unit? If so, which one?

I've used a few and Gaia is my favorite so far. Some minor nitpicks, but nothings perfect.

I just use the GPS chip in my phone / tablet and never had a problem. Those Garmin GLO units, etc just seem like an extra touch point to potentially fail.

Roger. Regarding the Garmin, I was thinking of being able to communicate, if stranded in the middle of nowhere. Garmin has what they call the Overlander that seems like it has everything in one for $699, which is roughly the price of a tablet (granted a tablet can do other things). I assume it has a subscription of some kind.

Oh, yes, I do have an Inreach, but I don't have that activated at the moment. I got it before that Yukon trip I had planned for that exact reason. But I didn't plan to use that as my GPS receiver to link to a tablet for GPS functionality.

The Overlander is a curious implement, but like you said, with the multi-use functionality of a tablet and the fact you can buy a good tablet for 1/3 the price of the unit, I'm not sure what you are gaining.

Since I've been doing a few solo trips of late, I figured I should get something I can use to communicate if stranded, so just trying to figure out the best option. The Garmin hand held aren't cheap either.

I sniped an older pre-Garmin Delorme Inreach for cheap off of one of the Overland BST forums on facebook. I should really investigate to make sure Garmin still supports it, but I'm not out much if they don't.

I hate the subscription plan though. I don't want or need to pay for a 6 or 12 month subscription. I wish they had a 1 week or 1 month freelance option, even if it came at a slightly higher cost.

Yes, I hate the subscription part as well, but everything is that way now.

I believe they do offer a monthly option, which doesn't seem horribly priced. It's called the Freedom Plan (?) => https://www.garmin.com/en-US/inreach/personal/#subscriptions

I've not found a thread on TW that talks about the different options. Still looking.

I remember the freedom plan. They get you in the fine print. Its an opt out service, not opt in. So you get billed every month just like the annual plan, but you can contact them and suspend your service for the upcoming month. I remember hearing they make it painfully difficult to get done, sorta like cancelling your comcast subscription.

    PRICKS!

I do like the Comcast comparison. I've had experience with that.

What about a PLB beacon? If it's just rescue you are looking for.

I'll have to Google that one.

Hopefully, SkyNet will be up and running soon.

So I never had a problem with Comcast, until about a year ago.

So I moved out of my old apartment in Orem mid 2018 to a place in Sandy (pre-house). It occurred to me one day that I hadn't ever been billed for the 5 days of a month I was still in Orem before I was disconnected from that address, and never saw an invoice. Figured they would send it to me and mail forwarding would catch it if they sent it to my old address. Over a year later, nothing.

Buy my house that you've been to, and all the sudden, I get a call from a collection agency for like $13 on behalf of Comcast. "They've made multiple attempts to contact you before now." "How, because I had no calls or written correspondence..." Guy had no answers. Nothing really came of it, but the fact they made no effort to contact then just randomly turned me over to collections is such BS. If it had hit my credit score, there would have been bodies.

PLB could work. The text message and tracking functionality of inreach was a benefit at the time so others could follow our route and now we were OK so we didnt have to field 90,000 messages "are you alive". Plus having a messenger service to relay "truck broke, send X part" or just general chat, etc is better in my eyes than a binary "Off or SOS"

Yeah, I'm used to the water version [EPIRB]. Basically just a "save me!" beacon.

That's fair enough. You can always just get your extra license and beam everything over 80m HF

That sounds about right. I didn't have that specific experience with Comcast, but a similar experience over stolen identity where papers where served to my home on a Sunday morning by an officer. That incident did show up on my credit report. It wasn't pretty. It took about $500 (attorney) and about 40 hours to resolve.
