To me it looks like his pinky is just held in the position a thumb would normally be in. The picture is not clear so it makes it hard to distinguish between a pinky and a thumb. Hold your own hand in a similar position as his is being held, like you are blocking the sun above your head, and you can see how it might look like a thumb. Holding your had like that moves the pinky upward into a thumb like position. Either that or the picture shows the hand from the back but not with enough clarity to see that is the position it is held in. The shadows seem to reinforce what it looks like is happening.

You guys are so concerned about discerning pinkies and thumbs..... what about back of hand and front of hand? I bet there's black marks on the back of his hand that fool your brain into thinking it's his palm.
