    Do you regret spending the money on a 2nd gen?

    I have the opportunity to buy a 2013 TRD Sport Access Cab 4x4 with 28k miles for $23,000 Plus tax (24,900) or get into a 2017 brand new for about 35k OTD.

    Anyone here think a new 2017 is worth another 10k?

    What did you guys do?

    I bought used and got a 2015 in 2017. Didn't think brand new was worth the extra cash.

    I bought mine new right as the new ones were hitting the ground. There are a couple features I wish mine had, but overall I'm really happy with mine

    I opted for a super low mileage 04 over getting a new 3rd gen lol. Wasn't much less $$ than a base model 2016 4x4.

    If you don't mind the slightly dated interior, the 2nd gen drivetrain is much more tried and true and has less complaints overall than the 3rd gens do IMO.

    1) Never buy new. Let someone else take the depreciation.

    2) I bought mine back in April if this year and dont regret it one bit. I keep my trucks for 200-250k (I drive 50-60k a year) and would rather buy at the end of a body style when all the problems are on the table, known and hopefully mostly worked out.

    The 3rd gen is moderately nicer but not by much. No real gains in capacity or anything else. If all goes to plan I’ll be looking for a lightly used 2018 around 2020.

    I bought my '09 DCSB TRD SR5 in October of 2016--never once considered a new one as we do not buy new cars because:

    • I prefer to let someone else eat the initial depreciation;
    • I prefer to let someone else deal with the shake-down cruise; recalls, TSBs, poor build issues, etc.;
    • I prefer to see for myself how the particular vehicle I am looking to buy has held up for several years and thousands of miles.
      (if it has made it 7 years and 100k miles, and still looks/runs good, then another 150k will be a piece of cake);
    My '09 is very much as new having just one previous owner who bought it--and had it serviced--at the same dealer, and has been a "Florida car" (no rust) its whole life. When I bought it all TSBs and recalls had been performed (headlights, rear springs, driveshafts, ECU updates, etc.), it had new tires, and all fluids flushed and changed. It had 134k on it when purchased and now has 142k, one oil change, and one tire rotation under it's belt (performed by me)--and runs as new.

    Some brand new 16/17 owners did not make 7000 miles without having their trucks fail on the roadway (CPS) or confiscated for months due to the rear-end recall--and then there's that silly SUV engine...

    Not one bit..I liked that the 2nd gen has less components to fail and changing the oil is much easier..Beauty is in the eye of the beholder...And i simply prefer less complicated things. The only thing i like better about the 3rd gens is that their side of the forum is much more entertaining.:argue:

    I bought mine in 2017, the 3rd gen was over budget for me. But doable at the same time.

    I also hated the manual on the 3rd gen and I hated the automatic as well. It came down to choosing a truck with a proven transmission and engine, that way all the bugs would be sorted out already.

    That depreciation doesn’t seem right for a Tacoma unless I missed something. If that is correct the 2013 is a steal. I bought mine about 3 weeks before 3rd gens came out if that counts. I don’t regret it yet. I value track records over new features though personally.

    The value of something with a few scratches and dings already cannot be overstated in my opinion. I hate worrying about a new vehicle.

    Only thing I regret is not getting a TRD offroad instead of the SR5. Couldn't care less about getting the newest. Newest doesn't mean best, the second gen has way more features than my 03 Silverado had, and a new similarly equipped Tacoma would have been $10k~ more at least

    I test drove the 2016 last year and didn't like the weak power train. Yes, I said weak. It has no balls for a work truck. I suppose it's fine for mall crawling and daily commuting. I bought my 13' limited and am very happy with it.

    I bought my 2015 right when the 2016 hit the showroom. I can’t stand the grille on the new ones. Glad I didn’t get one with all the problems they are having specially with smog in Cali

    No regrets, got mine weeks before the 3rd gens we're available. Paid under invoice and it's still worth almost what I paid for it. 54k miles and no problems outside of the driver side needle bearing due to lifting it 3"s. My father just got a 17 and complains it's gutless unless you have the ect button on.

    Bought my 2014 with 24k miles after the 2016s were already out. Didn't think the new one was worth the extra $10k. CPO comes with 7yr/100k powertrain warranty if that matters. I also think the 2nd gen looks cooler. I thought the 3rd gen looks would grow on me but they haven't, yet. Either one is a good truck.

    I bought my 15 offroad this past June. I was planning on buying new until I drove one. I love the interior on the new one and even like the exterior appearance but I didn’t like how much it shifted. It was lacking low end power compared to the the 2nd gens I test drove, and that’s what pushed me to the 15.

    Waited for the 2016 to be announced and then promptly bought a new 2015. Nothing in the 3rd gen that would make up for the risk and hassle of dealing with new model troubles. Glad I did what I did because indeed the 2016 had issues just as you'd expect. The 2015 isn't perfect of course but fewer problems and they are known ahead of time and the solutions already well documented. The 2016 was a new frontier.

    By now with a 2018 perhaps fewer problems and the issues that remain are well known with either TSB or a DIY fix.
