I dont know man. The duratracs were made with a pretty soft rubber compound too, my previous truck sat the same way at work's parking lot. The rubber looked amazing. My buddys KO2s look perfect and he drives it on weekends only.

Also, why would BFG buy back the tires? They would be the first ones to tell me to go fk myself if thats perfectly normal.

My duratracs after 1.5 years, look brand new.

I have never seen this on any of my tires before. If these tires were 3-4 years old, maybe. But imo, this is not right.

Different tires are different compounds. Even the same brand/model tire can have slightly different compounds. They are all thrown on a scale before going into a banbury mixer. Not sure what the range is and with different tires it varies. So each of your tires unless made completely of the same material, in the same batches, at the same time, will have a slightly different chemical composition. All that comes into play. How much synthetic or natural rubber, silica, carbon black, and other special compounds and additives all will give different results. Cure time, air pockets etc all have impacts on tread cracking. It’s something in the tire manufacturing industry we deal with everyday.

Sounds like a good opportunity to get some Falken Wildpeak AT’s. I had Bfgs on my old Tacoma and falkens on my dodge and id do falkens again when I need them.

I've seen cracks like that on tires that were 5-6 years old. Never on anything 2-3 years old. That said I don't think it is a problem. It is when they start showing cracks on the sidewall that they become dangerous. Check the date code. They may have been 3-4 years old when you bought them.

I just purchased a KO2 for my spare, size 265/70R17 C load. The first seller would not provide the DOT code. Second seller I purchased from was willing. The full DOT code is only on one side.20200715_091215.jpg
I was happy to get a new, never mounted C load KO2 to go with the 4 I purchased in June.

I was thinking wildpeaks, very good reviews from everybody. If im not mistaken they dont come in LT C load in 265/70/17. I need LT tires, since i go pretty far out in the wild. Sometimes the nearest reception is 2 hour drive, so i feel better with LTs. Also, i love how beefy the KO2s are on the sides, none of the AT tires offer that. IMO Toyo AT3s sidewall is second best, really like that tire. The only thing it comes in SL or E load in 265/70/17 :(

Nice, do the 265/70/17 fit in the spare tire area? I really would like to get a matching spare as well, great idea.

Yes true on the 2 ratings for 265’s. If you went falken then you just go 265E or go to a 275 and I think they make that in a C. The falken sidewalks are pretty darn beefy too. The 265SL is rated for the same weight as a C rated 285. I think difference between the two is 4 ply vs 6
I have to replace the 20 year old BFG MTs on my Jeep yj and I’m definitely going falken. Just not sure if I’ll go AT or MT

Pro-rating is a standard practice across all brand outside of Chinese.

Believe what you want, but my job is analyzing off tires for a living and documenting brand, tread depth, compound, dates, causes of failure, adjustment claims, etc etc.
I analyze more tires in a day, than any person will own in a life time.
    Also, I'm a rocket scientist.

So do we have a date code yet? Even now that you're going to buy new tires, knowing how old the tires are will help others determine if buying is a good idea, and really just good for general information.

Yes it will fit as it is only 1 inch larger than the stock spare tire 265/70R16. Others have put a 285 with is 2.4 inches larger than stock. 285 would be nearly touching exhaust shield.

Call me when your tire looks like this :anonymous:

But all joking aside I wouldnt say what you are seeing is nothing to worry about. On mine I notice a lot of similar looking cracks on the sidewall from running tons of miles at low PSI. The cracks essentially make a big ring around the sidewall. I was worried at first, but hasnt been an issue yet.
