Nice. I didn't get any adapters, I was just going to try spreading the prongs out a little.

Apologies for the late reply. Glad you were able to find the HIR version. But to answer the question for future reference, yes the non-HIR versions work as well, they just will not perform to the same output level of the HIR bulbs.

Good lord man. Aren't the license plate bulbs the same ones used for the map lights inside the cab? I couldn't imagine putting those bulbs in those places, especially license plate lights that stay on for extended periods of time.

NO!!! I believe that you would ONLY need those for 1st gen Tacomas. I used those adapters in my 1996 which probably have a different socket than your 2013.

The sockets will not work on 3rd gen taillights. I bought some and the bases are completely different. I sent them to a member here with a 1st gen, haven't heard from him, but I assume the worked for him.

I’m that guy and yeah, the adapters are for 1st gens only which have bayonet bases for the reverse lights.

Changed out the stock reverse light bulbs today to Osram 35w 860 lumen bulbs. Even though the difference is somewhat tough to see in the middle of the day, it is clearly brighter. I had to spread the prongs a little bit and also pinch the metal flanges on the inside of the plug in order to get the bulb to sit snug. I'll be anxious to see how these are at night. The pictures show the stock bulb on the passenger side and the Osram on the driver's side.

Hard to tell in those photos for sure, but looking behind the truck at night it won’t be!

@crashnburn80 - any idea on what the DIMMEST bulb I can get for my license plates are? I dropped in some LED ones from a kit, and after this thread I'm realizing this is part of the reason my reverse camera image quality is degraded.

If there was one complaint about my new bulbs, this would be it. They are so effective and bright now that it distorts the back up camera a little bit. I can still see just fine out of it, but the image is so bright at night now that you have to really pay attention to what you're looking at. I love the better visibility out of the mirrors though, or just looking over my shoulder.

I suggest stock bulbs for the plate lights. No need to makes your license plate extremely visible while also glaring your reverse camera. However there are methods to deactivate the plate lights while in reverse, which solves the reverse camera issue. Search for the mod. In my Gladiator it is a configurable option with a programer. In the Tacoma I believe it requires an installed harness.

I did get these installed and working today,

    I had LEDS in before.

The difference is that the LEDS have a brighter harsher white light but not a good flood area.
The gy6.35 Have a more yellow light but have a better flood area and not as harsh.

I was expecting more but they will work and are better because they flood better then the LEDS I had..

LEDS were 25.00 and the gy6 were a little cheaper.

It is important to judge by output looking at the illuminated area behind the truck, and not facing the lights themselves. The high color temp LED light looks brighter facing the light source due to the human eyes sensitivity to blue/high color temp light. The HIRs should handily outperform any $25 LEDs.

Definitely a substantial difference from stock! I'm not worried about the heat due to the short amount of time being in reverse.

Ive tested them for significant run times in reverse, heat isn’t an issue in a 2nd Gen.
