Gy6.35 HIR 921 reverse light upgrade (vs high power LEDs)

You can complain about them but you should get used to them, they aren't going away.

 

Yes, those are the correct ones. Long answer: Note “Eco” in the product title, the HIR bulbs are spherical (as pictured) vs cylindrical and the specs state 860 lumens from 35w, which is only achievable in gy6.35 halogens via HIR technology.

So I'm just reading through this thread... is there an equivalent anyone has found for 7440 reverse lights? Or a base adapter from the T6 wedge to the gy6.35?

 

Covered in the original post, copied below. At least one member had some lens melting from the adapter putting the bulb too close to the lens, I do t recall which type of vehicle it was. So use caution and check for adequate clearance in your application.


7440 bulbs
I get many messages from non-Tacoma owners about reverse light upgrades. If you have a common 7440 reverse light, you may be able to use a 7440 to 921 base adapter to still run this mod,

Just make sure it doesnt have a canbus that looks at resistive values of the Reverse bulbs...... you will be in for a spin.. LED bulbs Low resistance..... 921 Wedge Too HIGH resistance... SMH... gave up for the moment to get these to work in DD

I will definitely check for clearance. I've been waiting for a set of LED 7440 bulbs to ship from Amazon, so I have a backup (pun intended) if the adapter addition ends up making it not work.

I haven’t tried them myself. The 1000 lumen rating is raw, meaning actual will be much less. The 35w HIRs are 860 lumens actual, so they will be higher output. However in running those type of aux lights you typically have your standard reverse lights as well, so it isnt a direct comparison.

Note that the DD Pros offer a flush mount flood as well, with significantly higher output than the Rigids, while also optionally having the 4000k color temp:

I had these on my previous truck, was going to replace the same ones in the Tacoma but it seems they aren’t as good as the IR ones. They were super bright though.

Sorry if this has been covered. 27 pages is a lot to read through at once. I have a 2013 with oem led taillights. The passenger side is busted and has a small hole in it. It was sealed with a dime sized dab of clear silicon and has held up great for 3 years. It started to fail this summer and the “chrome” inside of the taillight started to oxidized. Now the entire thing is black. Looks like a BTLM if that was a thing. Time to replace the assembly. Originally I planned on replacing with these assemblies and preforming this mod.

I know these are nowhere near oem quality and you “get what you pay for” but the oem taillights leave a lot to be desired with the chrome and all. I think the solid red housing of the above taillights look better (super white truck). I know you can install 09 Assemblies, retain oem quality and achieve red lenses but I would like to retain the LED features. I know based off of the ultimate HL mod and most of your responses in that thread oem is king of assemblies when it comes to the headlights. Does the same apply to the taillight assemblies in terms of output/reflection? Should one be concerned with running higher temp bulb in an aftermarket assembly? Basically looking for you guys to talk me out of making a decision I might regret. Again apologize if this has been covered and apologize for the winded post.

 

First concern with those units would be the LEDs themselves. You are definitely looking at cheap china product, which doesn't tend to last for LEDs. I cannot tell you how many aftermarket LEDs taillights I see where part of the panel has failed or several emitters have failed. They will not last like OEM. The there is the question if they are as bright as OEM. Brake lights are a safety feature, they should be bright enough in direct mid-day sunlight to easily be seen. Reflector optics on the rear are essentially a wide-angle flood, even if output took a minor hit I wouldn't consider it a deciding factor for a reverse/tail light. Seals also tend to not last as long on aftermarket units. Hard to say how they would handle the higher temp bulb, but assuming they are the same dimensions (the bulb isn't closer to the outer lens) I wouldn't be too concerned. I think the big deciding factor is lower quality and shorter life, with the potential for lower LED performance.

 

Why not buy a used set of OEM tail lights and be done with it? I have a set off a 2014 that I could part with pretty cheap. If interested, PM me.

I’ve searched for some used oem assemblies and found a couple “locally” however the sellers are pretty proud of their prices. I’ll send you a pm to see what you want for them. What assemblies did you replace them with?

 

The ones I have area spare set I bought for my Tacoma with OEM LED tail lights. They never ended up going in.

 

I f*ckin’ love this place! Finally got around to installing these bulbs. Couldn’t find bulbs a while back so I sat on this. Install was really easy. I didn’t have to bend the legs; just tightened up the receptacles and the bulbs are tightly seated. Illumination is so much better than stock and visibility with my topper isn’t as bad now. C&B for the win!!

I have an aftermarket rear bumper for my 3rd Gen being installed in 10 days. There are cutouts to fit BD S2 flush mounts, wondering if it would be better to enlarge the cutouts and fit DD SSC2 aux backup light kit with red backlight? Leaning towards the DD but input is appreciated.

 

The backlight really doesn’t add much for functionality, so I’d likely opt for the plug and play Bajas. But if you want DD instead, best to do the mods before the bumper install.

 

If they have a way of cutting the pattern easily, go for it. Widening holes that are already cut into the bumper would require some finesse with a cutoff wheel, and you'd want to make sure you don't overlap bolt holes and make them oblong.



For what it's worth, the SSC2 flood pattern is much more diffused than the Baja equivalent. I used to have a single Baja S1 wide cornering in the trailer hitch (Hitchpod) and switched to two SSC2s in the bumper (sport flood, 4000K). Granted the WC may not be the right optic, but it was so bright that everything within the "cone" was blinded and nearly impossible to see in the backup camera. I much prefer the overall gentler and widespread illumination from the SSC2s.

 

Yesterday I ordered pros in flood w red backlight for my bumper. Probably be many months before I get them operational unless @AY_ARONTRD helps me fast track that stuff. I’m on slow boat truck mod speed these days. Stockpiled a bunch of gear though.
