Always told the girls in the fam. someone messes with you pick up the phone and call me. Sorry to say this but a world with a basic rules of decency is all but a thing of the past and its sad times now if you are old enough to remember the old days. We use to play in the woods or ride our bikes anywhere but now you cant let the kids out of the yard without going with them.. Jim

Things aren't any worse than they were in "the old days", this is a big myth. In fact, rates of crimes like kidnapping, child rape, etc., have been dropping for a long time. The reality is that kids were less safe back in the "old days", it's just that people weren't so damn paranoid. Parents coddle their kids so bad it's ridiculous. Parents are driving their kids to the fricking bus stop these days, and letting them sit in the car until the bus pulls up. I can't remember my parents doing this, or anyone else for that matter, in my entire K-12 school career (I was in elementary school in the 80s.)

It's partially a problem of sensationalizing every incident in the media, making it seem like child molesters are lurking around every corner. The fact is they're not. And crap like "catch a predator" on TV, blatantly entrapping hapless saps in situations that are exceedingly rare in reality. Middle school girls do not invite random guys on the internet over for sex.

 

Actually as the age range was so close - she 24 and he 17 when it started - if these were just 2 people in the community, it would likely be perfectly legal. In Colorado the age of consent is 17. But Colorado also allows for "close in age" exceptions. That is, 15 & 16 year olds may engage in consenual physical relationships with parties 10 years older or less. Even those under 15 may engage in consensual physical realationship with parties 4 years older or less.

It's the whole "position of trust" thing that screws her over. Because in Colorado, a 17 year old CANNOT consent a relationship with a person in a position of trust. In many cases, that obviously makes a lot of sense. But when the age range is so close as here, not so much. Fire her, sure. But let's not waste taxpayer resources putting a woman in prison who, though she shouldn't be in the classroom, also shouldn't be in prison.

 

Everything you write is pretty spot on. Except for one thing. Apparently the studys are showing that older females having sexual relationships with underage males is a relatively new thing. The data shows its prevelance jumped dramatically starting in the early 90's.
Not to say it didnt happen before then but its became an institutional thing since then.

That may be true, I haven't read much about older female stuff with younger males, just what I see in the news. I do think it is an entirely different dynamic than males in positions of power over younger females, with different issues/problems.

 

Well screw ME for graduating HS in '89. Timing was never my best characteristic.
